Invade

Post by Hartley »

When I send a TF to unload troops on en enemy base hex, how do I avoid the transports damaged by fortification guns ?

This is after bombardment and airstrikes on the port before the invasion.

I takes time to take out this guns...have everytime a recon flight over the target and you have an idea how many guns this defence units have left.

One bombardement isnt enough, same for airstrikes....you have to soften up the enemy over a long period.

Mix in the Invasion Tf´s some heavy units (I prefer CA´s, all other ships can simply take lot of damage of this coastal guns) which can return fire close to the beach.

Use port attack airstrike to hit engineers and coastal defence units.

Another way is to land at a nearby beach and march to the base avoiding those guns altogether.

Thanks, but why is it that a TF will revert to
surface-combat/retirement-allowed every time after a bombing run ?

@ Hartley

I think when a bombard TF has done his job they will do so because they finished their initial job...i never let the bombard TF sitting at the target base...i have surface TF to screen the invasion force.

@drex

Is it a good way to do such a nearby landing?

Ok maybe i avoid coastal defence, but how about fatigue/morale of the troops?

Attacking a fortified area after a 50 mile or so-march in tropical conditions without paved roads in complete combat gear is really heavy stuff

coastal guns

here is another way to silence those guns.

Inlude some big guns into your invasion TF's. You can't include BB's but you allowed to include some CA's. They will start to return fire if the coastal guns open up and silence those defenders rather quickly for that turn.

CL's are mostly not up to the task as they are not heavily enough armed and their armour is not thick enough. They can end up pretty damaged after a duel.

My 2 cents,
Chris

That's the trade off for avoiding guns. Sometimes the beach is not so far though. I have had opponents march over the Stanley Owens Mts to attack PM successfully so a little beach march shouldn't be so bad. Also this way your opponent can't shock attack you on the beach - this is worse than the CD guns.
