Getting Spanked! Can someone help me?

Post by daddog »

You can see below a snip of the current situation. My IJN opponent has had several TG’s within range of my bombers at Port Moresby. All of them have:
Moral ranging from 50’s to 90’s
Fatigue ranging from 11 to 35
Yet not a single one has attacked his enemy task groups. What am I doing wrong? They are all set for Naval attack without a secondary target. I am losing ships left and right from not only his own CV’s, but from enemy bombers at Rabaul. I also have a CV just south east of Port Moresby whose squadrons were set for Naval attack, but none did.

Can someone help me before I am slaughtered any more?

Couple of questions -
Does your opponent have CAP/LRCAP over his TFs and do you have sufficient fighters allocated to escort your bombers?

What are your Naval Search levels and how much of it is actually flying out of Port Moresby?

What is the attack altitude to your bombers?

Do you like being spanked?

Don't know if he has CAP set, but I am sure he does. I had two or three squads set to escort and two set for CAP over Port Moresby.

I had a squad of P-38's set for Nav search. They were the only one. Everyone else was set for Naval attack? Is that the problem?

Alts were set from 6000' to 1000'.

Getting spanked is no fun. ;)

Hi, First you suffer a 25 percent reduction in air ops because your base is overloaded. Size 4 can handle 200 ac and you have over that.

Another 25 percent reduction results from a lack of air HQ in the Hex (and it is a while before SWPAC gets one)

So your starting each day down 50 percent. Any wonder why the groups then fail their leader and morale checks?

Bombers will not fly without escort if target has CAP (they might but they have to pass a check and early on they rarely pass)

Morale below 70 is bad. (I never send groups into combat before they have rested to 0 fatigue and 99 morale. Then when they drop to below 70 morale I withdraw them.

Don't try to do too much too soon.

Try this
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,

Only in that the more naval search, the better the target info on ships at sea. I would tend to give the nav search a bit of a boost by setting the level bombers on Naval Attack to have 10% Naval Search. If you still aren't getting any action, at least you'll know it's not for lack of target info.

Mogami,

Are you saying that the 50% reduction in numbers, from overstacking and lack of HQ, will then have a negative impact on the leadership and morale checks? How does that work???

I thought the leadership and morale checks for air units were based entirely around the squadron's current leader rating and the squadrons current morale.

This is the 1st Scenario, Coral Sea. So I can't transfer some HQ to help out?
Hi, First you suffer a 25 percent reduction in air ops because your base is overloaded. Size 4 can handle 200 ac and you have over that.
Ugh! Ok... will pull out a couple of squads. Where do you find the info on number of AC with base size?
Bombers will not fly without escort if target has CAP (they might but they have to pass a check and early on they rarely pass)
Rgr that. Ok.. will set more to escort. Will the escort have to be able to reach the target also?
Morale below 70 is bad. (I never send groups into combat before they have rested to 0 fatigue and 99 morale. Then when they drop to below 70 morale I withdraw them.
Holy cow! Below 70 is bad? Most are below 70? How do I get their morale up??? If they are tired a couple days of rest and the fatgue goes down quite fast. Will morale change as fast?
Only in that the more naval search, the better the target info on ships at sea. I would tend to give the nav search a bit of a boost by setting the level bombers on Naval Attack to have 10% Naval Search. If you still aren't getting any action, at least you'll know it's not for lack of target info.
Rgr. I will change that. We/they seem to be spotting task groups, but nav search was set to zero for most of them.

Thanks for the help gents! :)

Raverdave screen dump?

A few suggestions :

1 - Get the number of planes in PM below 200 - the airbase is only at level 4 so you can't support more than "4x50". The best way is to get your C-47's out of their.

2 - Put all your bombers on 20% naval search. A squadren that finds its own targets is more likely to attack.

3 - Don't put your tac-bombers below 6000 feet - you'll only get lots of casualties, lower moral and raise fatigue - and you won't improve your chances by being at low altitudes when you are early in the game.

4 - Move your longer ranged bombers like Hudsons and B-25s to Cooktown - they can reach all of lower NG from there. Also, put your B-17s in Cairns - they still have the legs to reach lower NG from there too. This way they won't run out of supply as quickly as in PM.

5 - Keep your search planes ( P5s and Catalinas ) in different bases in Australia and have them at a moderate altitude ( 5000 ft is good ) and at 50% search. The more planes you have searching from different bases, the better. This way it is hard to have all your search flights washed out at the same time.

6 - Realize that bombers alone won't stop TFs - you'll have to bring some fleet assets up to contest the Japanese if you really want to stop them from landing somewhere. Also, fill the area just east of NG with your subs - they'll pick off straglers.

Have fun -

Coral Sea

Post by mogami »

Hi, Well since it's the Coral Sea scenario there is not much you can do. This scenario is resolved around the carrier battle.
Because of the 50 percent reduction off the top the group leader will not be happy about making a strike with 8 planes. (He might go with 12. There is not enough time in this scenario to make more then 1 or 2 strikes. (So rest the groups early and don't overload the base.) Don't move ships into enemy range without CAP. Escorts do need to have range to the target (or they will not help against the enemy CAP) Good Luck and have fun.

Gents,

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I have taken many notes.

Have some other questions if you don't mind. :)

1 - How many AC can an airfield with a size 1 handle? How about 2, 3, ... etc?

2 - How long would it take to go from an airfield "0" to a 1? Or an airfield size 1 to a 2?

3 - What is the fastest way to improve morale?

4 - What will training improve? Is this only used in the long scenarios? I suppose it would not matter much in the 15 day Coral Sea scenario.

Thanks again! :)

1) UP to 50 without penalty (equation: 50 ac per airfield point

2) depends:) . If you are the USN and you put 2 or 3 CB or Avn Eng Bns with supply on an island with a "potential" of 1 or better, and they do nothing but work on the airfield, the airfield will be ready in 4 or 5 days. It varies on the supply, number of engineers, if they are alos trying to build fortifications and a port simulataneously, and if they have engineer vehicles (like the above example)

3) Do nothing :)

4) Right. Only good for a couple of months straight. Particuarly useful to train those experience level 30 pilots you get as replacements as the Japanese.

The fastest way to improve morale is to move the planes and pilots into a non-malaria base, then set them at "Training = 0".

BTW - you are better off setting aircraft at "naval search" at around 20% than setting them to training. For fighters that can't do naval search, your best bet is to "Train" them against enemy bombers.

Non-Malaria Bases:

IJN: Truk

Allies:
Australia Cairns and south (Not including Cooktown)
Noumea and the bases on New Caledonia.

Actually, I have it on good authority that dadog does indeed like to be spanked.

Mostly by La7s and Nik1s.
