Allied AI on the offense in NAfrica

Post by gwgardner »

Much like for a human player there is not much that can be done with the Poles early on, or the French for that matter than to attempt to delay inevitable Axis victories. In North Africa it is a bit different and under the right circumstances the Allied AI for the UK can be aggressive at times

It's now Jan 24 '41 in my 'beginner' level AXIS game against the AI. The Allied AI has been pretty much totally on the defensive so far, except at sea and in the air.

I had advanced the Italians in N. Africa into Egypt and set up a defensive line. Things were quiet there for several months but in Dec. he Allies launched an offensive. All three arms have hit the Italians hard. So far the offensive has been directed towards the south of the Italian line.

If you go up a notch in the AI you'll see it gets more offensive in Africa. At least it has for me.

A turn later, I moved the Italian 1st Army into the hole in my line. It had less entrenchment therefore, and that's where the Allies hit the line, destroying the army with air strikes and armored assaults.

I really botched this! I figured I should pull back, but I hated to lose my dug-in positions for the rest of my front. Now I've probably lost the entire Italian Army. We'll see if I can break back.

Meanwhile the DAK has just begun arriving.

Good to know. Makes it very interesting in the desert. I like the way the DAK doesn't simply appear, but there is a MPP cost over a period of turns for it.

One thing I'd like different in N.Africa, is a better idea of just how much Malta is disrupting supplies. How is that quantified in game terms.

Your ports and towns will usually be 1 point lower than the previous turn. Most ports and towns have a max of 5 for supply. That 4 hurts when reinforcing (given the reinforcement chart explanation in the manual) and when losing a unit that isn't supplied by at least 5 supply points (no chance to rebuild the lost unit at reduced cost).

Also if a port falls below strength 5 then it slows down the unloading of reinforcements that arrive by sea.

This can be rather crucial when you need new units quickly, because they will only be able to arrive in one turn, and unload in the next if port strength is below 5.
