ORIGINAL: poodlebrain

If your intelligence is correct, then I'd be thinking about an amphibious assault on Moulmein and Pegu (depending on the defenders present in Pegu). A complete flanking of his forward defense beats the hell out of marching and fighting through the jungle and forcing a river crossing.

poodlebrain-

I am not sure how accurate my Intelligence Reports are.

I have considered amphibious assaults at Pegu; Moulmeim; and other locations.

However, El Lobo owns the Bay of Bengal. He has Carrier and Combat Surface Fleets in the Bay. Any Allied attempt to amphibious assault Burma would no doubt be crushed at sea.

For now, though the Allies may face stubborn Japanese resistance in Burma, the invasion of Burma will be by land only.

Combat Report
for
November 19, 1942

The first major battle for Burma occurred today two hexes West of Magwe. Elements of the British Eastern Army thrashed the Japanese. The balance of the Eastern Army is 27 miles away from reinforcing those elements of the Eastern Army that engaged the Japanese West of Magwe.

In Northern Burma, the 25th Infantry Division moved unopposed into Warazup and the 41st Infantry/A Division moved unopposed into Katha.

Across the Bay of Bengal West of Burma, B-17s flew from Bangalore and bombed Japanese forces at Colombo. The bombers inflicted light Japanese casualties while one B-17 was destroyed and 28 B-17s were damaged.

In China, without any combat, Japanese forces moved into Chungking. The siege of Chungking has begun.

Operation Land Shark, the ground march toward Fusan, commenced on October 15, 1942 and is proceeding slowly. The Allied advance has secured the following bases in Burma: Akyab, Kalemyo, Katha, and Warazup. The next two objectives in Burma are Myitkyina in the North and Ramree Island in the South.

El Lobo moved his artillery across the river from the South into Chungking to join nine Japanese Infantry Divisions, the 2nd Tank Division, and Support Troops. This act triggered a massive bombardment attack at Chungking. Chungking's Fort Level is at 6; the Assault Value is at 5; but supply is only at 4,885. RE: THE WAR COLLEGE-Rio Bravo (A) v. El Lobo (J)

Post by Rio Bravo »

The Situation in Northern Burma
as of November 26, 1942

The U. S. 24th and 25th Infantry Divisions marched into Myitkyina without a shot fired. The Japanese had deserted the base. The Allies were pleased to find that the air capacity level is 2; the fort level is 3; and the supply for the base is at 3,629.

The 24th division was 100% prepped for Myitkyina. The 24th division swithced to prep for Lashio. It started out at 25%. For both units, the Fatigue is at 10% and the Disruption is at 28%. Both units are in rest mode in an effort to get their Fatigue and Disruption percentages down before marching towards Lashio. This rest will also give some time to the AA units and Base Forces that are earmarked to accompany each division to catch up a bit.

The 87th Mountain Regiment, the 77th Chindit Brigade, and the 11th Chindit Brigade are at Warazup. The 87th will remain to Garrison Warazup (it is in rest mode). The Chindit Brigades should march into Myitkyina tomorrow or the next day. One Chindit Brigade will remain to garrison Myitkyina. The other, though fatigue and disruption somewhat high, will continue to march directly to Bhamo. The 268th motorized Brigade, AA unit, and Base Forces earmarked to accompany the Chindit Brigades are trailing behind and will eventually make their way to Bhamo. One Chindit Brigade will remain to Garrison Bhamo, the balance of the Chindit earmarked units will move to Lashio.

The idea in Northern Burma is to cut the Japanese escape route to China and to establish a sizable base (in all respects) at Lashio as the jump-off base into China.

Chinese units are attempting to, and so far have managed, to disrupt Japanese supply to Kunming, Tsyung, and Paoshan. In the event that Lashio is deserted, the 24th and 25th will immediately march to Paoshan. The 268th motorized Division; 119th RAF BF; and RAF 225 Group BF; 1st Medium ART; and 2nd Medium ART will remain at Lashio to protect the backdoor until all of Burma is fully secured and garrisoned with the Burma Corps, ABDA Forces, and the seven Chinese Corps'.

That is a rough snapshot for now and a snapshot of Burma is below.

Best Regards,

-Terry

At Adak you have 42 guns to his 390.

This is a somewhat misleading statistic as it reports all "guns" which includes AA and Anti-tank that cannot fore in a bombardment, but it is still a fair gauge of relative gun strength.

In this situation it is likely better to not bombard as the counter battery fire is too severe and you are incurring more casualties than you are causing.

There is still an up side to what you are doing, but it remains hidden and is difficult to gauge the effect of.

Daily bombardments cause the enemy to use supply, reduces or holds down morale and increases or keeps up disruption.

None of these effects get reported back to you.

There may be valid reasons for keeping up a bombardment that is causing more casualties on your own forces than the enemies.

It pays off when you know you can recover your disablements faster than his.

It pays off when you have him pinned down on a beachhead with limited supply you can force him to use up by counter battery fire.

It pays off if you when you are preparing your opponent for an attack by keeping his morale low and his disruption high.

The game is full of trade offs. The key to good play is gauging the relative value of any chosen action.

Just yesterday when doing a turn I was looking at an LCU that had some mortars, some anti tank guns, and some howitzers. Due to the low tally I noticed that the mortars and howitzers were counted in the 'Guns' tally, but the anti tank guns were not. I'm sure if we look at the device stats in Tracker or directly in the scenario file we could figure out what makes a device get counted as a 'gun', but for now I'll just go with the notion "AT guns are not part of the tally".

Allied ground losses:
155 casualties reported
Squads: 16 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
3rd Tank Regiment
4th Garrison Unit

Hans-

Thank you for the information.

Considering I think the Allied units will recover faster than the Japanese units, I will continue to bombard the Japanese on Adak Island hoping to eat Japanese supply, cause fatigue and hopefully disruption to the Japanese troops.
