2.0.11.6 Open Beta Released!!!

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

I have reinstalled the game in steam engine and tried added 11.6 patch again. But the result is the same. I have to wait for the steam 11.6 update....

Pekische, as a long shot, load 11.5. Rename the exe, then copy in the 11.6 exe and try to run it. If it fails, just delete the 11.6 and rename the 11.5 exe back to what it was.

@Battlerbritain, can you post a save game from before the crash? That might help us track down what happened. Thanks.

Email sent to JimS with game save (~4Mb) and Report.txt attached.

I'll try playing and saving regularly and see if I can get a more reproducible crash that doesn't need 2hrs+ of playing first before it goes bang.

To battlerbritain,

Can you give me some more info on what happened. I have the saved game file you sent to Capn D loaded. It is at 3 hours 35 minutes elapsed time with 2 hours 25 minutes remaining. It sounds like the game was almost over when it crashed it from your earlier post (2 minutes of game time remaining). Is my understanding correct?

Do you have the same game file from the turn where you were trying to issue the air strike that caused the crash, or the game turn just before that turn? That would help speed things up on my end in dx the problem.

Also, which aircraft unit were you giving orders to when the game crashed?

When it crashed, did it crash to desktop, quite responding, or did you get the auto bug report?

Any other info you can think may be helpful too. Thanks

Hi,

Yes, the game was almost over when it crashed to desktop.

The FPRS window instantly disappeared, it gave a little popup and progress bar that was there for about 2 seconds then disappeared. It wasn't the standard auto bug report with options of what you want to do with it. The popup just had a title of "FPRS.exe" and a progress bar.

It happened so fast all I had a chance to do was say "Nooooo!".

I hadn't been manually saving either and Windows indicated that in the Windows Application log that it had saved a dmp file, but when I looked nothing was there, except the Report.wer.

Checking through the Windows logs it appears that Windows was applying Windows updates at that time, without my instruction to do so even though I have Windows updates set to 'Prompt before download and apply' set.

What I think is happening is that the Airstrike is calling up some resource and the FPRS.exe can't get it (immediately) and it's going belly up.

I was trying to set one of the US F-4E airstrikes (there's about 5 of them all the same).

My machine is a quad-core with 4GB RAM and a 1Gb graphics card running Win8.1 . No other apps were running at the time.

I'm replaying the same game save and saving each turn and if it goes pop again I'll have something saved a bit closer to the bug (hopefully). I sent the game save I had that was closest: sorry it wasn't any closer, but the game was going fast so I didn't anticipate any problems.

Got a game save just before the game goes boom!

It's a 6mb file so sent to JimS offline.

Load up the game save, click on an aircraft to make an airstrike, click on the map, click back on the aircraft and boom!

Hope this helps,

B

Crash popup attached.

Jack54, you want the players edition 2.06 as the starter. Then update to 2.0.01b. Then you can go Betas with 11.2 for the maps and then 11.6 for the latest EXE.

To battlerbritain, Got the file, thanks. I was able to duplicate the crash. I have bumped it upstairs for Rob to look at.

Questions...

1. Does it matter when the files were originally created. When I created the Bad Neustadt scenarios I had the 11.5 Beta installed.
2. If I update with a production version, the current 11.5, does that change anything?
3. Next question if I am working on Scenarios should I NOT load the Beta versions?????

I will let Jim chime in on these questions too, but it shouldn't be a problem working on a scenario even with the beta--I do it all the time. You may want to replay your scenario to make sure you don't have to make any adjustments to it due to changes in the exe code. If say the programmers makes some adj with combat accuracy or arty effectiveness, you may need to made some adjustments as to play balance. But normally, these changes do not break a scenario.

A big issue that you want to watch out for is if you are using any of the official data files and we make some change to it. Then you need to refresh your scenario in the editor to update the data in your scenario. I don't believe there was any changes to the data files between 11.5 and 11.6.

Al, the only time there is an issue is if the data files were updated. At that point a scenario should be refreshed to capture any changes. If you are playing PBEM you will want to have the same game version as your opponent to avoid a version conflict. The beta is stable and building with it should not cause any issues. Plus you can always refresh the data when the full update rolls out.
