Map Won't Scroll

Post by AZKGungHo »

Just installed the new beta and the map won't scroll using the mouse. I can move around with the arrow keys but not the mouse.

Kinda weird.

OK - it's working now sort of. I can move the map if I put the arrow to the edge and hold it there. But it doesn't always work and when it does scroll it's almost impossible to control as it moves quickly and with lots of jerks.

If you push really hard with the mouse on the edge, it works. [;)]

The Version Change list has an entry for this, but it made it worse on my machine. The mouse to screen edge is intermittent, and when it does work it jumps to far. Using the Arrow Keys has always been a bother, as they either don't work or they jump too far. Trying to hit the arrow key real fast sometimes results in the desired one hex at a time scroll.

I agree, the arrows aren't great but the scrolling, when it works, is often worse. For now I'm mostly using arrows and hoping for a fix soon! [8|]

Sorry to hear about the trouble everyone and this is a tough one for me to narrow down as I can't replicate any of the jerkiness on my end as it generally scrolls smoothly enough, but I'll see if I can figure something out there for those that are still reporting that the scrolling is not smooth.

We did add a slight delay before scroll when the mouse is at the map edges and this was only because some found it too sensitive when attempting to select some of the UI near the map edges. I can halve the delay in a quick fix to see if that will be an improvement.

In the meantime, for scrolling, one option you might like to try is to go to OPTIONS->ADVANCED and then under the MAP TEXT area change the value for the 'Scrolls Before Text Hide' to see if a value higher than 0 improves the scolling smoothness for you.

The current setting of 0 will enable the fastest scrolling in game and the value goes all the way up to 20.

Let me know if there is a preferred value that works better for anyone here, thanks.

I noticed the same after loading the new update. Scrolling is not as smooth as before.

It's pretty smooth here. Definately a huge improvement over the old way of scrolling. [&o]
To have a referencepoint. I'd consider the way scrolling goes when dragging the screen laggy.
Updating the names on the screen takes a little over a second.
I'm playing on 2560x1440 though. So scrolling alot for some, might not be much for me if you count the tiles.
The delay on scrolling was originally ment to prevent scrolling by accident and making the UI disappear.
Since it's not disappearing anymore, there's no need to put a delay on the edge of the screen.

Can you explain some more about the workings of the setting?
What i've noticed is only a small decrease in performance when set on 20.
Once moved al around the map, the names actually stay on the map and I don't even need to reload them.
This unless i go full speed from left to right. Does that sound about right?
If it works the way I think it does, I'd like a max of 40 for this setting. [:D]

I have mine set so the text disappears after 4 scrolls and it works fine.

It's certainly a lot smoother on my system than setting it at say 10, so it's probably the case that everyone will have their own preferred setting.

Good point and I can set this to no delay and add it as an eventual option for those that don't want it to necessarily scroll instantly if you want to select a UI button and accidentally moved the mouse to the edge of the screen at the same time.

The issue with scrolling speed has always been that rendering text to the screen slows things down, and on some older systems it slows things down quite a bit.

To maximize the speed of scrolling we can have the text disappear completely during scrolls, this is the current default, or you can have it disappear after so many scrolls of the map, i.e. from 1 to 20.

So if you set it to 4 as Bill has done, then it will scroll a bit more slowly for the first few scrolls and then accelerate after that to the maximum scroll speed.

I can easily set this value up to 40 and see how that goes for you... I might send out a hotfix later tonight if all goes well via a Dropbox link if everyone is good with that?

OPTIONS->ADVANCED > MAP TEXT >'Scrolls Before Text Hide'

The current setting of 0 will enable the fastest scrolling in game and the value goes all the way up to 20.

Works for me !! Scroll Delay at Edge is still there and slightly annoying, but with the setting of 20 it might only scroll one hex when we try to hit the ui buttons, so maybe turning it back a bit will be good.

Sounds nice. I have a pretty beefy system, so it can probably handle that.

Glad that I wasn't the only one experiencing this. There is a definate "stickiness" to the scrolling and it is nowhere near as fluid as the first build.

That's why the setting of 4 works for me, because it stops me zooming off to the outer limits of Siberia when all I wanted to do was shift my view a little to the east. [:)]

'Scrolls Before Text Hide' is at 50 now.
I don't have any noticable slowdowns.
Also the names are just about permanently in view now.
No more annoying popins of names. [8D]

I also have it set to 20 and I am still experiecing a pronounced lag when scrolling north (top) or south (bottom) of the screen.

I'm still working on it. It seems to do fine for a while after I set the value, then it gets difficult again. It's really annoying and I'm back to using the arrow keys more than the mouse to scroll which isn't optimal for sure. I'll try setting the value higher this time and see if it makes any difference.

I set mine to 15 and know I have forgotten that it was even an issue. I hope you guys have the same results, because trying to play with a funky scroll is the pits.

Ok, just tried 15 and then 20, which is as far as it goes, got nothing really. Lowered it to 10 and it's still doing the barely moving thing.
