We are still trying to cut off those units making NE, but if we don't at least all subsequent combat with them will be in open terrain.

The Imperials that were defending in the forest are now slipping into Hangchow without being caught up. There are still 2 units in the woods but they too are likely about to cross the river without bother. Hangchow now shows ~83,000 troops and Shanghai shows ~89,000. Add in ~32,000 at Nanking, plus >13,000 at nearby bases, and ~2,500 at Ningpo thrown in for good measure. There are a whole lot more Imperial troops that stayed in this area than I figured. I thought they would withdraw to the north for another defensive line.

To the north our armour has Nanyang surrounded and is trying to destroy the 3 enemy units trying to flee that city.

On the Chungking plain, we are nearly ready for the first attack on Imperial positions in Chengtu since sealing the river hex side to the west. We have enough forces in place to sustain the assault, provided that supplies flow well enough.

If you squeeze everything in the line from Nanking -> SE down to Shanghai, you will have to finish them off in heavy urban terrain. Much better if you can get into Soochow and push everything North and let it temporarily escape from Nanking to the NE where there is little defensive terrain. Then you can leave a few troops to keep Shanghai isolated while you bomb/bombard the heck out of it, and to destroy the Nanking refugees in open terrain.

Agreed. The unit currently SW of Nanking is a division moving east that will enter the town there next turn. With only ~2k defenders it will be seized quickly, cutting off any troops in Nanking from Moving to Shanghai.

The troops in Hangchow - a different story. Roads are not displayed on this map, but they favor the withdrawal from Hangchow to Shanghai. The primary road into Hangchow from the NW crosses a river, which I prefer not to do into UL terrain. Look at the hex just NW of Hangchow and consider going E then SE to block Hangchow from Shanghai, and the problem is that E movement is on a secondary road, so even air strikes might not slow enemy units enough to get in front of them. It looks like we are going to see ~170,000 Imperials bunker-ed down in Shanghai, with lots of potential AA. My plan (mulling it, not solid yet) is to use naval bombardments to disrupt AA potential coupled with air strikes on HI and LI to eliminate supply generation. We already took a bite out of HI.

I know about that road but I have no one in place to use it until the forces in the forest get out to that clear hex. the division you mention is the one tasked to move east and stop units currently in Nanking from either moving or retreating SE toward Shanghai.

Last turn I sent a TD Bn full speed into Nanking from the same hex where that division under discussion is located. I did it to close the hex side and stop the Nanking units from retreating SW and making for Shanghai via that route. I thought about sending it south but I doubt it could stand up to a full-horde stampede from Hangchow to Shanghai, plus I really needed to close that hex side in Nanking. I really could have used another unit or two there! But I couldn't be sure he would pull back from the forest, and maybe he wouldn't have if I didn't have the 3x Australian divisions in Wuhu moving to cut off the Imperials from getting back to Hangchow. Catch-22, maybe.

Here is a view just so that everybody else will know what you and I are talking about. It is a bit busy with both roads and hex side ownership turned on but that can't be helped.

Oh, BTW, getting into that clear hex between Hangchow and Shanghai would not even be enough. The force there would have to be able to immediately retreat any Imperial force that moved in from Hangchow. Why? Because we have no units in Shanghai, so all DAW HQ has to do is move a single unit from Shanghai to flip that hex side and then his units could move (and is necessary retreat) from that open hex into Shanghai. In other words, with multiple divisions and 83-83k troops in Hangchow the Imperials could very likely force the march from Hangchow to Shanghai. So I took the option to trap the units at Nanking from ever reaching Shanghai.

The Imperials at Nanyang retreated toward Sian. The Imperials at Nanking have changed direction and are heading SE, into our other division which has just entered Wusih, where it will attack at once. Our armor has made it to Kiangtu and will evict the 2,100 or so enemy there.

Hangchow is dangerous flying for Allied fighters on ground attack. Almost 3 dozen P-40 and P-38 losses were tallied there today.

I was especially impressed with how well single squadrons performed against a numerically greater CAP time after time. The forecast for tomorrow is rain, which would make for poor bombing weather. Our fighters will rest a day while our bombers wait for good weather.

We are sending a number of CV, CVE, and two fast BB to Pearl Harbor for upgrades with DD and DE that are also due for upgrades. That will make 6 of the 8 fast USN BB upgrading, and most of the old USN BB are due for upgrades. In a couple of cases those would be quite lengthy conversions and will be put off until after the war to keep the ships available. In other cases the ships would be out of action for at least two months considering travel time and so will wait until the fast BB are all back on line. A couple of upgrades are brief but will wait for the moment.
