RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
Night fighters aren't really necessary to counter night naval bombing. It's terribly inaccurate.
RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
Mundy: One disconcerting thing is that I got no in-turn cues about mine encounters at Ponape. Several AMs and DMSs took hits and I wasn't aware of it until I opened up Combat Reporter. The report is ambiguous as to whether they took mine hits or the coast artillery lit them up.
Just look at the individual ship info screen and on the right just below the damage list it will say "Last hit by ...." and show the most damaging thing that hit them.

Thanks guys that helps. I won't worry about night stuff for now.
24 January 1945
The nice thing about this point in the war is no more withdrawals to worry about.
I might have misspoke and said Port Moresby's airfield was undamaged earlier. I meant Ponape. PM is 100% damaged - port and airfield. Base forces are unloading starting this turn. Air support is on land, but the engineers haven't debarked yet. It'll be awhile before that base is up and running properly.
I have most of my B-25 squadrons in the area at Ponape now. Two P-38 squadrons are solely dedicated to escort while two Jug squadrons will CAP. I'll try to keep anything from entering or leaving Truk. Truk invaders are roughly evenly split between Ponape and Kusaie. Roi-Namur is the main staging area for ships, as they can handle nearly any repairs there. A bunch of floating dry-docks are there, including a 55,000 ton one. Pretty much all the rocket ships and landing craft type ships are departing Pearl for here. When the time comes, I can deal stuff out. Combatants are also congregating here. Roi-Namur looks like Ulithi now. I just need to feed a bunch of supply and fuel to Ponape and Kusaie. I'm guessing roughly a month until the next move.
After that, prudence would probably dictate the Marianas next. I'm eager to take someplace big like the Philippines or Formosa, but I need to keep the steps small. Distances to Pearl are starting to be felt at this point.
At PM, once the base troops are on land, I'll start yanking combat troops out, to ease the stacking situation. Lots of naval support troops are also offloading to help that end of things.
I beat up an RO sub near PM. I caught another in the gap near Milne.

Does it show the most damaging hit or merely the most recent?
Edit: Congrats to Mundy for some notable progress lately -- hope you can keep it up!

The text says "Most recently hit by" but what I have observed is that it uses the most damaging hit, even if it was days ago when it happened.ORIGINAL: jwolf

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
Looking at the minesweepers, coastal artillery worked them over while they were working. No in-game messages when this happened, though.
KS decided to sweep Ponape from Truk... oops...
The info screen says 42 of them went down to none of mine -- one jug to ops losses. The two P-38 squadrons didn't patrol, as I have them totally dedicated to escort. Not sure which count is correct. I've always assumed the "I" screen was gospel.
After about three days, Port Moresby's damage is down to 12. Port damage is stuck at 100, though. I'm guessing that won't get fixed until the airfield is completely healed. I've moved about 480 aircraft there, out of a support capacity of about 550. It is a level 8 field. B-24s at Townsville are in the middle of healing up and upgrading, so I'll move them in later. It's mostly Beaufighters, Beauforts, Mitchells, USN dive bombers and lots of fighters which live there now. Everyone's been moved under 10th RAAF HQ command to lessen any command and control issues. Nothing will probably ever supply another IJA/IJN base on eastern New Guinea again.
Most of the base and flak units at Cairns are re-locating to Townsville for further redeployment. All the rest of the combat troops at PM are loading up to head back also. I'm leaving one division, one armored regiment and one artillery group there, as I don't really expect a counterattack anytime soon. I'll be taking Milne Bay next, followed by Buna and Lae -- probably simultaneously.
USN carriers are finishing getting relocated to Roi-Namur. The last two left Pearl. I'll have 14 CVs and 7 CVLs on hand, plus a few CVEs.

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
Just be sure to keep good fighter cover there. Does KS every bomb air bases by night? I have found that bases with many planes are pretty vulnerable to night bombing. Unsurprisingly, night bombing against airbases is a lot more effective than night bombing against moving ships.ORIGINAL: Mundy

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
He hasn't really a history of doing that thus far. I have several night fighter squadrons sitting at Pearl right now, so I guess it wouldn't hurt to get some transferred over here. Hopefully I can hopscotch them over rather than pack them up on a ship. I have 3 or 4 Black Widow squadrons right now.
As it is, I have about 6-8 fighter squadrons there, three of them being P-51Ds. Another 51D squadron is at Townsville, healing up after converting. I'll probably start sweeping Rabaul soon.
The 100% port Damage at PM healed up in a day, so this base is fully up now. My troop count there is like 600 over the stacking limit, so I won't sweat it. Supply there is over 150,000, so I'm good there.
The only real action this turn was a light armor unit getting near Akyab cross country from the east. His forces were more than I expected. I'll have to divert some troops to Cox's Bazaar to prevent any trouble.

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
02 February 1945
Another month.
Last turn, USAAF Bomber Command decided to completely throw a wrench into their OOB. Just about every squadron upped their count. 12 plane squadrons went to 16 and 16 plane squadrons went to 24. A little bit of stress on the pools. B-29 squadrons are pretty much at 15 now. It puts a delay moving bombers to Port Moresby, waiting for them to heal up.
I've been tagging ships with my subs in a line from Truk to Iwo Jima, getting a few.
A decent base force group, escorted by Australian Commandos are enroute for Milne Bay. Recon has been showing nothing there. Maybe I can interfere with traffic to Noumea and south. Another HQ is bound for PM. The USAAF 5th Bomber Command, I think is going to Milne. CVEs will cover everyone.
A few turns ago, I swept Rabaul. It wasn't much better than even. Corsairs had the hardest time of it. Jugs, as usual, swept all before them.
Once Milne's secure, I'll start moving West along the coast.

Fairly quiet.
I'm starting to forward deploy amphib ships to Ponape and Kusaie to get them ready to go. Probably looking at 20 rocket ships with each group. My two carriers from Pearl reached Roi-Namur. Shangri-La arrived in Panama. I think it's a good wait until the next fleet carrier arrives.
5th AF HQ is unloading at Port Moresby. The group destined for Milne is still loading supplies.

More excitement today.
KS tried running a supply Convoy to Calcutta, which I raked over the coals. Subs, Shakespeare mainly, did her part, too. Another sub took a shot early in the turn farther south, but missed.
Insult to Injury...
KS moved a bunch of fighters in at the last moment in an attempt to cover them. The first few strikes with few escorts suffered, but the rest punched through -- especially the ones with tons of Mustangs along. All my fighters in the area were purely set to escort, with no CAP.
The uncomfortable part of all this is that I had next to zero lead time on when this was happening. I could have timed a bunch of sweeps, with earlier notice. I have moved a couple AVs to Vizagapatnam, with some search planes now based there. I would like to move them to someplace like Cox's Bazaar, but I was wary of moving ships through the area.
At this point, I'm wondering how bad the supply situation is getting at Calcutta. I'm now moving all the troops at Jamshedpur (3,000 AV) to the neighboring hex NW of Howrah. If it looks like supply is a serious issue I may plunge them in.
Since the hits were pretty spread out, I ran the results through a spreadsheet to see if any of the transports escaped. Doesn't look like it. I didn't show all the .50 cal hits most of them took. The "sunk" indicators are from the combat report which means that happened during the battle. The tally:
China Maru 4
Hokko Maru 5
Hukusei Maru 13 sunk
Konan Maru 7 sunk
Kotohira Maru 11
Kyokko Maru 7
Macassar Maru 14 sunk
Mansei Maru 4
Sanuki Maru 4
Tazan Maru 6
Tihuku Maru 2
Ume Maru 4
Yamabuki Maru 10
Yamahagi Maru 3
Yoshida Maru 3
Yosida Maru 6 sunk
Yuzan Maru 6
Most of them are toast. They were all caught at Diamond Harbor, so they didn't even reach Calcutta, and may not at this point.
I missed some B-29 squadrons at Bhopal, which had their numbers increased. My B-29 pool is running out at this point. The B-29B shows up next month, I think with 40 per month, just like the current version. That one can reach out to 40 hexes. I'll double check, but it may put Bangkok within reach.
More excitement today.

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
05 February 1945
I had to deal with this.
KS had tried this about a week earlier, when more PT boats were present. Then, he fought through enough where the bombardment was thwarted. Not so this time. Looking at things after this, the damage turned out much less than what the report indicated, with most of my airpower functional. A battleship group is arriving next turn, and I'll keep them out to deal with these. Alaska, and a dozen more destroyers are also enroute from Roi-Namur. "Ching" Lee is running them.
Real warships arrived at Diamond Harbor this time. I landed a couple hits, but took enough damage.
My guys are standing down for a few days. In two or three days, I'll start sweeping Calcutta. He has some 350 fighters there right now. A bombardment group from Madras is enroute to Diamond Harbor to hopefully kill this group. I'm hoping another supply force isn't right behind these guys. He's been good at dodging the wave of subs I have in that area.
I had to deal with this.

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
Can't say I'm much of a fan of using a battleship fleet to guard against this sort of bombardment against forward bases. Just too risky. An IJN destroyer fleet like the one that just hit the air base could really cause problems for a BB fleet if they got lucky and got in close at night if radar fails (which happens far too often). Furthermore, a BB fleet that is in a forward deployment is liable to come under air attack as well. If you ask me, a large Fletcher fleet would be a much better idea here. Fletchers can deal with just about anything the Japanese can throw at you. Might not be able to outright defeat a large IJN SCTF, but simply engaging the fleet and getting it to waste ammo will go a long way to protecting the air base. Save your BBs for bombardments and protecting your CVs, protecting forward air bases is not a role they are well suited for.ORIGINAL: Mundy
Also, why are you using B-25J1s in low naval attack? It's not an attack bomber so you only get 1/2th the bomb load. You should save those for higher altitude bombing which is what they were designed for and leave low naval attacks to attack bombers.
RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
I'll rearrange the defenses at Ponape. I was coming to similar conclusions there, with maybe some CLs thrown in. I heal everyone's 1 sys damage before the move. A destroyer heavy group plus the two PG groups should suffice, as long as i have enough of them.
I never looked too closely at B-25s, thinking all were pretty much equal at antiship.

His surface forces around India are withdrawing back south, passing Akyab. My land forces are mostly in the hex adjacent to Howrah. I'll see how the bombardment goes first. I've split the group up, with Richelieu and the CLAAs and some destroyers continuing on to Diamond Harbor. Everyone else will hit Calcutta. I haven't seen any PT boats there, despite all my naval searches. Hopefully supply is tight on his end, so I can move in. Bombardments should happen in about two days.
Out East, I'm still positioning transports for the next move. The troops at Kusaie are about 100% prepped, while those at Ponape are in the 35-45 range, so I'll need some time yet. I've formed up my carrier groups with 7 fleet carriers in each along with about 4 CVLs. We'll see if he decides if Truk is worth KB fighting for. If not, things will get very tight for all his forces south of there.
Troops have unloaded at Milne Bay. Everyone got off in one turn, with supplies unloading. The commandos will do their token attack to take the base. It's completely undeveloped, so I'll need time to get an airfield up. Between the current group and my follow on supply force, I should have over 80,000 in supply there to start.

Only some B-25s are attack bombers. The ones that are not get a bomb load penalty for low level attacks and don't use guns to suppress flak.ORIGINAL: Mundy

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
I guess my assumption was that all the later models were still classified as "attack bombers".
As it is, I've restricted all bombers at Ponape to 7 hexes to stay away from Truk. They'll be getting theirs before too long.
Bombardment should reach Diamond Harbor/Calcutta next turn. Troops are marching on Howrah.

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
In ground attacks against troops or airfields I have found the model with the 8X .50 Cal MGs in the nose (B-25G?) are more effective than the B-25H with the slow-firing cannon. Haven't had the opportunity to use it against ships but a shell like that should be nasty against unarmoured vessels.ORIGINAL: Capt. Harlock

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
I had read that the 75mm wasn't as popular. Basically, pilots could only get off 2-3 shots with it per run, rather than hosing down the target with .50 fire.

Fairly productive turn.
Bombardments hit Indian targets.
Without the cruisers along, Richelieu doesn't really deal out the damage. I was reading on the Pacific War Encyclopedia site that only AP was produced for her main guns.
Bombers from Delhi hit Calcutta to little effect. Troops are a day or so away from Howrah. Fortunately, no river to cross.
Subs were busy too.

RE: Too much Iron in my Diet - Mundy vs KenchiSulla
TBH it isn't the guns that are as important as flying with a full bombload. That being being said, I'm not sure which gun arrangement is better in game. I can't say my attack bombers have flown enough LowN missions to really get a good idea on this. I've definitely seen the .50 cals suppressing flak and maybe even starting light fires on a few occassions but I've never seen a B-25G with their 75mm cannons hitting a ship before because I haven't used that model enough in that role. Would love to see a combat report of a 75mm canon hitting a Japanese merchant ship to see how much damage it could do. If someone has one, could you post it here?ORIGINAL: Mundy
I had read that the 75mm wasn't as popular. Basically, pilots could only get off 2-3 shots with it per run, rather than hosing down the target with .50 fire.
