teamviewer vs skype

Post by franklin1000 »

New to WIF, so many questions!

Does both Skype and teamviewer let both players control the shared screen? Or, is it that one person moves for both players?

Teamviewer lets both players do their moves on shared screen.

I should add that I've used it successfully for several 2 players Wif games now.

Skype does have a mode where one player can "take over" the mouse on the other player's PC, but others will have to speak to the issues of image quality and lag. I expect most people only use it to communicate with one another while playing using some other screen sharing software. Teamviewer allows all players to control the mouse at the same time (sequentially of course) and we've had as many as five players in one of our games.

Skype might be good for an experienced player to do a demo on a Newbie's PC while he watches.

Five players?
I thought MWIF was at the two players stage. How many people can you have playing?

On Teamviewer one PC can host the game and as many as you give the password to can join. You can use the Solitaire or Hot Seat mode (we used Hot Seat). WiF can have 5 or 6 players. The only issue is keeping the US Entry and Pact chits secret requires an honor system.

If you use NetPlay (which currently only supports two players) then you don't need Teamviewer since you connect to one another through the Matrix Slitherine server. NetPlay is still early beta though, and needs some more bugs squished before it's as bullet-proof as Solitaire and Hot Seat.

One player per major power so 3 Axis & 4 Allied (I think 4 Allied - USA, CW, USSR/ComChina & France/Nat China).

With Teamviewer you tend to email the saved turn in quiet periods for one player to complete their move 'off-line' to the point where they need the other player(s).

So after say ground strikes by tactical bombers to disrupt opponents units & you have fought any air-to-air combat caused by other player intercepting your planes, then you can save the game & get on with your land moves without the need for others to be online.

Helps keep the game moving where the players are only available once or twice a week.

Just a final note
Used teamviewer for the screen and skype for audio this weekend. It went well. The game is fine this way. I had an issue with an echo once TV was started. Turned the sound off in TV to fix the problem.
