First up, Cape St Vincent.

The Re.2000 begins searching while the Germans and Italians each fly a Nav to the 2-box.

A substantial portion of the RAF, plus their Spanish allies are available for defence. Anybody taking to the skies?

Swordfish with Spitfires escorting scramble to the defence of the convoys.

The Italian sub skipper decides to stay deep.

Searches: Axis 1, Allies 4. The Axis planes locate the Allied scouting cruisers. 2 surprise points decrease their AA fire to NE. The two cruisers are aborted (note, I didn't use the die roller programme for the A results as 3 A's meant it was unnecessary).

Round 2.

Guessing the Allies aren't likely to retire at this stage and won't commit any more air, we get to searches. Rolls of Axis 5 and Allies 8 end proceedings. Where do the French and Spanish cruisers abort to?

The Italian artillery captain is dismayed when they unpack the ammunition to find it stamped "75mm, gun salute, for ceremonial use only". They fire it off anyway to at least make some noise.

The German artillery is a different matter, however.

To be fair it would have been a miracle if the Japanese had succeeded - there is nothing east of Yenan - at least not of a ChiComm persuasion [;)]
