Yesterday, El Lobo got the best of Capt. Haggard when a Japanese submarine sank an Allied AM. Today, Capt. Haggard got the best of El Lobo when an Allied AM put five hits on a Japanese submarine. El Lobo advised in an email that he doesn't think his sub will make it back to a friendly port. The Cat & Mouse game the two of them are playing with PBs, AMs, Submarines, and mines is cracking me up.

El Lobo's ground forces one hex East of Ramree Island now have only one route of retreat left and that is to Ramree Island. The same holds true with respect to supply. Accordingly, Capt. Haggard will continue to lay mines around Ramree Island and order some of his submarines to patrol the waters around Ramree Island. El Lobo is aware of this Japanese predicament. Today El Lobo launched an attack in an effort to dislodge the Allies one hex South of the Japanese forces trapped one hex East of Ramree Island.

In a day or two, Lashio will be completely surrounded by Allied ground forces.

Chengtu has a garrison Assault Value of 3,975.

Chungking has a garrison Assault Value of 5,054.

The Chinese are attempting to interdict Japanese Logistic Routes.

While attempting to hold Chengtu and Chungking, the Chinese are also bolstering their strength in the Himalayas and South of the Himalays in an effort to hold the road to Chengtu.

The 87th Mountain Regiment, 77th and 111th Chindit Brigades, and the 268th Motorised Armour Brigade have entered China to threaten the Japanese back door. These units are one hex West of Paoshan.

[center]The Burma Situation[/center]
[center]as of January 17, 1943[/center]

The U.S. Army 25th/B Division is nine miles away from completion of fully surrounding Lashio. The U.S. 24th and 25th Infantry Divisions comprise the units surrounding Lashio. Two Base Forces, one Aviation Engineer BF, two AA units, and two Artillery units are one hex East of Lashio and will move into Lashio when the 24th and 25th Infantry Divisions attack.

The 27th, 41st, and Americal U. S. Army Infantry Divisions along with substantial tanks, tank destroyers, and artillery has laid siege to Shwebo.

Japanese Forces one hex East of Ramree Island are under siege by I Australia Corps (with numerous artillery units and tanks and two tank destroyers), III India Corps, and the Eastern Army. The Japanese have one route out; to Ramree Island.

The 32nd U. S. Army Infantry Division are marching south through the jungle on the Eastern side of Shwebo and Mandalay. The 32nd/C Division is 14 miles away from being one hex East of Meiktila.

The 40th U.S. Army Infantry Division along with the Burma Corps are on the Mandalay Plains West of Mandalay and south of Magwe.

Though slow-marching, the Allies are making steady progress toward their goal of splitting the Northern Japanese forces from the Southern Japanese forces and cutting logistic routes from Southern Burma to Northern Burma.

All of the airbases on the Imphal-Ledo line are now at level four. The airbases at Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, and Akyab are also at level four or above.Base Forces, Construction Forces, and Aviation Base Forces are at Kalemyo, Katha, Warazup, Myitkyina, and Bhamo building up forts and airbases. The initial priority targets for Allied bombers in Burma are Shwebo, Lashio, and Ramree Island.

Three Chinese Corps, three British Brigades, two Indian Divisions, and the 9th Australian Division are marching toward Prome. The 9th Australia Division is loading on transports at Aden. The three Chinese Corps, two of the three British Brigades, and one Indian Division are either at or close to Akyab. One Indian Division is moving East from the jungle onto the Southern Mandalay Plains one hex West of Magwe.

Allied Intelligence indicates that at least 90 Japanese units are in Burma. I could count up the known Infantry Divisions (which I will soon), but for now, I am guessing that the Japanese have at least 12 to 15 Japanese Infantry Divisions in Burma.

Looking at the Strategic Map, it is surely tempting to put Operation Sea Shark on hold while immediately launching an invasion of the Marshall Islands.

Though tempted, at this time, I am not convinced. The Allies need to get supply to China from the sea. Delaying the scheduled June 1, 1943 of the invasion of the Marianas Islands would result in further delay getting supply to China from the sea.

Prior to June 1, 1943, I would sure like to kick El Lobo out of Marcus Island and Ceylon. However, I don't see that happening.

Capture Paoshan as quickly as possible once you have retaken Lashio. It is already in a precarious position from a supply perspective. You might want to exacerbate the situation with an occasional airstrike to force increased supply consumption, and possibly destruction. Do what you can to soften Paoshan now.

pls don't convince yourself to delay anything....you need to be mixing it up more with IJN....attrition, attrition, attrition. I don't think you can win war in India/Burma theatre before the Korean War breaks out!!

Capture Paoshan as quickly as possible once you have retaken Lashio. It is already in a precarious position from a supply perspective. You might want to exacerbate the situation with an occasional airstrike to force increased supply consumption, and possibly destruction. Do what you can to soften Paoshan now.

I want to take Paoshan and Tsuyung as quickly as possible.

Allied U.S. V Bombers are moving into position along the Imphal to Ledo Line and airbases are presently being built in Burma. I will dedicate some bombers to bomb Paoshan by the end of the month.

I do enjoy the Canadian sense of humor.

The Allies have a firm hold on all of India. The Allies have four Chinese Infantry Corps and several Indian Infantry Divisions garrisoned in India just in case El Lobo chooses to invade India this late date in the war.

It is only January, 1943.

The Allied progress in Burma has been slow. El Lobo has obviously decided to give it a good fight in Burma. However, if El Lobo does not retreat soon, El Lobo is going to lose substantial ground forces in Burma that the Allies won't have to fight elsewhere later.

Burma will fall long before the Korean War breaks out.

The Allies have already marched reinforcements into China and are threatening Paoshan. There is now a good chance that Chengtu and Chungking will not fall into Japanese hands.

The lengthy battle in China and the early Allied invasion of Burma has forced El Lobo to commit a substantial number of Japanese ground forces and aircraft to these two battle fields and Japan is spending a great deal of supply fighting the war in Burma and China.

The Allies are fighting El Lobo where they wanted to fight from day one, versus letting El Lobo dictate where the Allies will fight. Further, in Burma, the Allies are fighting the Japanese on an even keel versus being outnumbered and overwhelmed elsewhere. For example, El Lobo's Carrier superiority has netted him little up to this point in the war.

As mentioned, though tempted to invade the Marshall Islands, at this time, I remain committed to invading the Marianas Islands on or about June 1, 1943.

I know that you have been advising me to take a Southern route to Tokyo. Early on, basically from day one of the outbreak of hostilities, I decided to take and Eastern and Western route to Tokyo.

In Burma, China, Manchukua, and Korea I will eat Japanese ground forces, aircraft, and supply for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. By taking the Marianas Islands and Formosa as early as possible, I will deny Japan supply and reinforcements from the South through naval blockade and I will get supply to China coastal cities to support the land war.

Perhaps I have chosen a losing Grand Strategy.

Time will tell.

Win, lose, or draw, the war is interesting and fun.

Burma.... a fascinating aspect of this war.

If you are fighting 'the war of attrition' here...indeed it will be slow.. climate / terrain / troop exhaustion.

However capturing Burma can actually have other intended effects than re-opening the "Burma Road" and therefore supplies to your truncated Chinese allies.

To often I think people associate the Burma campaign purely to supply the Nationalist Chinese... there are other strategic options.

1) A push down the coast from Pegu to Victoria Point / capture Port Blair.

Isolates the Ceylon invasion and Ceylon is left to wither on the vine. In fact the IJN Push into Ceylon becomes Rabul 2.0 (historically) - a hopeless loss.

Both these acquisitions if well defended / well supplied cut off any landward basis movement of troops and supplies and the ability to move between i.e. Singapore >> CRB >> China. The British Navy with full RAF land based Air cover and support present a significant threat to movement in the Indian Ocean / south China Sea of supplies from shipping as well..Even with the less than spectacular British carriers...The Royal Navy can also raid and bombard not just the IJN. The British and Indian Divisions upgraded with their artillery / tankette components will be able to hold while the American divisions you placed into theater can act aggressively.

(Cant recall.. did you leave Aussie's in Theatre? They really help as well).

2) Push down the rail line from Chiang Mai to hold the rail line south into and including Bangkok

Divides the Co prosperity sphere into half.. much as above but with the added pressure of having bomber bases well within range of IJN oilfields.

In both cases get some AA forward obviously.

Both might be able to be accomplished during 43 depending on how aggressively you act and when you get Rangoon.

Once the Allies get Mandalay and road and rail line movement comes into play the IJN defense can start to crack quickly. Even with a good human opponent I suspect. Given your opponents seemingly heavy disposition in China and troops diverted to Ceylon... it might be a bit of hard shell / soft underside situ...

None the less Mouleman (spelling) is a tough nut to crack...

pls don't convince yourself to delay anything....you need to be mixing it up more with IJN....attrition, attrition, attrition. I don't think you can win war in India/Burma theatre before the Korean War breaks out!!

The Allied progress in Burma has been slow. El Lobo has obviously decided to give it a good fight in Burma. However, if El Lobo does not retreat soon, El Lobo is going to lose substantial ground forces in Burma that the Allies won't have to fight elsewhere later.

Burma will fall long before the Korean War breaks out.

The Allies have already marched reinforcements into China and are threatening Paoshan. There is now a good chance that Chengtu and Chungking will not fall into Japanese hands.

The lengthy battle in China and the early Allied invasion of Burma has forced El Lobo to commit a substantial number of Japanese ground forces and aircraft to these two battle fields and Japan is spending a great deal of supply fighting the war in Burma and China.

Secretly lurking here often. My first post I think.

Burma.... a fascinating aspect of this war.

If you are fighting 'the war of attrition' here...indeed it will be slow.. climate / terrain / troop exhaustion.

However capturing Burma can actually have other intended effects than re-opening the "Burma Road" and therefore supplies to your truncated Chinese allies.

To often I think people associate the Burma campaign purely to supply the Nationalist Chinese... there are other strategic options.

1) A push down the coast from Pegu to Victoria Point / capture Port Blair.

Isolates the Ceylon invasion and Ceylon is left to wither on the vine. In fact the IJN Push into Ceylon becomes Rabul 2.0 (historically) - a hopeless loss.

Both these acquisitions if well defended / well supplied cut off any landward basis movement of troops and supplies and the ability to move between i.e. Singapore >> CRB >> China. The British Navy with full RAF land based Air cover and support present a significant threat to movement in the Indian Ocean / south China Sea of supplies from shipping as well..Even with the less than spectacular British carriers...The Royal Navy can also raid and bombard not just the IJN. The British and Indian Divisions upgraded with their artillery / tankette components will be able to hold while the American divisions you placed into theater can act aggressively.

(Cant recall.. did you leave Aussie's in Theatre? They really help as well).

2) Push down the rail line from Chiang Mai to hold the rail line south into and including Bangkok

Divides the Co prosperity sphere into half.. much as above but with the added pressure of having bomber bases well within range of IJN oilfields.

In both cases get some AA forward obviously.

Both might be able to be accomplished during 43 depending on how aggressively you act and when you get Rangoon.

Once the Allies get Mandalay and road and rail line movement comes into play the IJN defense can start to crack quickly. Even with a good human opponent I suspect. Given your opponents seemingly heavy disposition in China and troops diverted to Ceylon... it might be a bit of hard shell / soft underside situ...

None the less Mouleman (spelling) is a tough nut to crack...

I am glad that you have followed the battles between El Lobo and myself.

Yes, the Australians are in Burma and bolstered by numerous tank units bought out from Australia proper.

I have followed witpqs' AAR closely and watched him move down the Burma peninsula and through Indochina. He more or less did what you have mentioned and he was quite successful so-doing.

I would also like to rumble down the Burma Peninsula and into Indochina. I won't have the troops to do so for quite some time.

An El Lobo xAK bumps into one of Capt. Haggard's mines and is heavily damaged.

Due to Allied artillery which is somewhat ineffective and Allied bombers, the assault values are slowly falling for the Japanese ground forces located one hex East of Ramree Island and at Shwebo. It will be many days more before the Japanese at those two locations are hammered enough to make it prudent to launch ground attacks at those two locations.

El Lobo's aircraft are like Pit Bulls every single day.

Japanese submarine is heavily damaged by one of Capt. Haggrd's AMs. El Lobo advised in an email that it is highly doubtful the sub will make it to a Japanese port.

Allied aircraft take a beating in Burma.

Though El Lobo continues to hammer the brave Chinese from the air, it is looking more and more like the Chinese will hold Chengtu and Chungking.

The Japanese have pulled all ground forces out of Colombo with the exception of one unit.

The American ground forces at Adak Island have fully recovered and the fort is getting very close to level four.

Most of you are unaware that my fiance is Canadian and that in 2010 she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer.

She has underwent multiple rounds of various types of chemotherapy. She has been a very brave and courageous woman that has suffered horrible pain and discomfort.

On August 21, 2016 an MRI showed a large malignant tumor on the back right side of her brain. On August 29, 2016 a neurosurgical team removed 80% of the tumor. Deborah came through the operation in good standing with no permanent impairments. She was released from the hospital on September 3, 2016 and went back home. Deborah will soon be undergoing radiation treatment.

I am traveling to the Toronto area to be with her and care for her from September 13, 2016 through September 28, 2016. At this point, I am unsure whether I will have any time to dedicate to WITPAE. Accordingly, I might not be able to post on this AAR until September 30th or October 1st.

For those of you that have wives, significant others, or older daughters, please be sure to have her family doctor give her a 125a test (it is a blood test). It is the only test that can possibly provide an early warning to a woman that she may have Ovarian Cancer. None of the other tests will warn of Ovarian Cancer. If Ovarian Cancer is caught in stage one, there is a very good chance that the cancer can be completely eliminated. If not caught in stage one, there is no cure and the disease is terminal.
