there is a heart of iron game, with a good 1st world war and DOD.

it is on steam. darkest hour.

I think it runs from 1914 to 1950 and uses the heart of iron 3 engine

It uses HoI 2 engine, actually.

Darkest Hour and Arsenal of Democracy were blessed alternatives in the... uhm... darkest days of HoI 3's launch (even if seeing the US enter the war in HoI 3 because the Bismarck attacked Pearl Harbor - ALONE! - was one of my finest moments of gaming ever [:D] )

US enter the war in HoI 3 because the Bismarck attacked Pearl Harbor - ALONE!

Thanks for reminding me why I will never buy HoI ever. This, and Brazil conquers the world.
Conflict with the unexpected: two qualities are indispensable; first, an intellect which, even in the midst of this obscurity, is not without some traces of inner light which lead to the truth; second, the courage to follow this faint light. KvC

Actually, the only game in the series which is being derided because you can conquer the World with Portugal is the current HoI4. HoI2 and its spin-offs (Arsenal of Democracy and Darkest Hour) were real gems. HoI3 debuted with great potentials - pity that it was launched in pre-alpha state (a bit like WiF, cough). Among the "best of" I also remember:

- The Afrika Korps being stopped at El Alamein by two months of snow. In Summer.
- Poland preparing for war under a heavy rain which lasted from 1936 to 1938.
- Finland declaring war to Albania "just because".
- Argentina declaring war to Soviet Union and actually landing near Vladivostok!!
- Mexico invading France (???) out of envy for what Argentina did (I think).
- The USA appearing with four carriers in the Med in 1938 even if they were still totally neutral.
- Countries buying oil from you for 1.2 gold only to sell it back at once for 0.5 gold.
- Guderian and Model arriving in Italy to lead troops! I actually composed in my head the welcome speech by Mussolini! [:D]

...And I'm sure that there were more. But the stunt pulled by the Bismarck was really one of a kind.

Anyway, all the above happened not because HoI 3 was conceptually a bad game. Far from it: from day one it showed an immense potential. But it was released in a dire condition (not as dire as WiF, because it had an AI, MP and in three years was fixed, but still...) Today, thanks to some good expansions and mods (exp. BlackIce), it is a very, very good WWII strategic game.

HoI 4 OTOH... Let's say that, even if at launch was much more polished, I see no potential at all in it. Now they are actually trying to frantically redesign the game in real time via some big patches (the last one actually included a system for Peace Conferences created by a modder unsatisfied with the default one). Well... Good luck to them...
