Naval Command HQ

Post by m10bob »

I wonder if the range of a Naval Command might be extended to maybe 50-70 hexes...or the range of its' ships?

Nimitz with all his radio gear certainly directed ops as far away as the Coral Sea from Pearl.

Not sure if this is even moddable, IF warranted.

AFAIK Naval HQs are basically to represent the admin site of attached let's say base troops or in the case of the Japanese, the SNLF as well as providing port support facilities on a base. To assign ships to a specific HQ doesn't have any benefits, except for co-op games or pure aesthetic reasons. I personally like assigning TFs or ships to specific HQs, for organisational reasons.

I don't recall exactly, but I believe the range of an HQ is limited to 9 hexes.

IIRC the range of naval HQs affects their benefits adding to naval bases, nothing to do with ships.

I think you and Bill are right...and that is what I was thinking when I threw the idea out there..

Of course a land commander should be limited to their "AO"...but a Naval "AO" should extend for thousands of miles,(thanks to the radio) IMHO.

We all have books lying around showing how Nimitz affected battles from Pearl going on far away?

I don't know if that distance is even moddable with the editor...just wondering aloud.

HQs of all types and sizes follow a standard code model that is not flexible enough to differentiate functionality with respect to national technical means, doctrine, mission, etc..

Naval Command HQs function more like Naval Districts in terms of what sorts of activities they support or give bonuses to. Naming them for the main Pacific Commands and assigning historical commanders is a bit of chrome that is important to many computer game players, but somewhat disingenuous and duplicative in terms of instrumentality, purpose, and utility in the AE game environment. The developers had to use what they had and put it into the commercial context.

To answer your question directly, no, the max range for effect is 9. But think about the paradigm. ‘You’ are Nimitz, Halsey, Spruance, or MacArthur, or Yamamoto, Sugiyama, Chaing, etc.. ‘You’, as the player, acting in loco persona, extend the range of any Command HQs influence on operations by simply scrolling the screen, selecting a target, and giving your orders.

In other words, HQs are nothing but ‘centers of goodness’ that provide certain game system attributes and bonuses according to their type and according to their range. Think of them as help, care, feeding, maintenance, coordination, administration units. Admittedly, land HQs use leader specs, but these have influence spheres within the engagement hex but only if they are present, so no harm, no foul. The naval analog is the TF commander.

Context, context, all is context.

Remember that in the game some of the commands being mentioned are depicted as Command HQs and have capabilities beyond what has been mentioned. Command HQs also get a multiple of their command radius for some game functions.
