For the surprise roll Axis roll a 8 while Allies roll a 4. CW use the surprise points to reduce the effectiveness of the Italian fighter.

The criteria is the die roll must be less than or equal to half the defence factor for the X result. Half of 5 is 2.5 so a 3 would be more than half but if the defence factor is rounded to 3, the X stands.
