Hehehe, you remind me of my girlfriend, sometimes people just think too much when watching movies . They die after watching the video / her face because the author want´s it that way.

Hehe I know you really like it deep down!! Don't forget that the film was made as a "student fim" for something like $20,000. It was shown at a film festival where it made a big impression. Then Hollywood picked it up, did some tweaking to the sound and editing and released it - they could spend large amounts of money hyping it since the production cost was nothing!

And it did scare alot of people including me because it got the basics for a horror film just right. You just have to ignore the shaky camera, boring dialogue, repetitive plot etc.

It is the most profitable film ever made (in percentage terms) of revenue/production cost.

Well... in the Japanese version it is because the girl is demonic and the video tape is cursed. The girl always has her hair pulled over her face to hid her devil eyes. When she appears in front of somebody, she simply reveals her eyes and the persion dies from pure terror/fright.

The Hollywood version does not explain how the tape could be cursed by a girl, physic or not.

Not a big fan of horor moves on the whole. Too campy/cheesy. I did see the ring and if you like horror movies then this is the one to see. Some pretty twisted images that leave you really contemplating the directors mindset at the time of filming. As with any horror movie it does, IMHO, get a bit hollywood as the movie roles on and some scenes do not make sense. Worth a look mind you. And yes I have seen the original:)

Now IF you liked the Ring you MIGHT like Ringu, the Japanese original. A lot of white men -- excuse me, Westerners -- can't handle movies outside the "Hollywood" type production values. Ringu definitely falls down in the slickness of its remake, but it has, IMHO, an even scarier ending! I won't give away much, but it had some "hit the head on the wall" moments for me -- that's when something is so startling that when I'm sitting in bed watching the movie I jerk back involuntarily

I liked both movies very much. Freaked my wife out totally. Then, to freak me out she let her long black hair fall in front of her face and approached me. Yaah!

Blair Witch had its moments -- mainly one or two. The handheld camera gimmick made me motion sick and it all would have been better if the participants weren't so irritating that you'd wished the Texas Chainsaw guy -- Leatherface -- had come out and promptly stuck them up on hooks. Add to that the fact that I saw it with a drunk late night audience at the movie theater and it was totally ruined for me.

No, the Ring is in a different plane from Blair Witch.

Other good scary (not gory) movies: The Haunting (1965?) -- black and white version only; The Haunted (1989?); The Changeling; Kwaidan; and Onibaba.

Yes I saw a French film the other day that DIDN'T have Gerard Depideau in it that had the same effect on me

Seems like everyone here definately thinks the Japanese original is better so I am gong to search that one out this weekend.

Yes, I enjoyed this as well and I'm not a horror fan either. I am a Naomi Watts fan though. Two other "spooky movies that make you think" that I've enjoyed recently are "Frailty" & "Signs". I'm sure most people know about "Signs" but "Frailty" is a sleeper. Bill Paxton's directorial debut and a very good first effort.

A bit of trivia: The scary little girl in "The Ring" is the same actress that plays the little sister in "Donnie Darko". "DD" is my favorite movie to be released in a long time. Not for everybody but it's worth giving a chance.

I would rate Donnie Darco right up there with the ring. Though I have met many many people who hated it because they cliamed they didn't understand it. I think is is superb.

Yup....now that was a good movie...Donnie Darco. But I am not sure that I would call it horror....in fact it really does not seem to fit into any of the regular categories.
