captain of HMNZS Achilles

Post by el cid again »

Ship slot 3230
has leader 17192 Jones H.W.
an ensign with little naval skill

should be leader 17192 Capt Parry, William
he is correctly rated for skill but not assigned
AND he is NOT available at start - but needs to be in
order to command the ship.

I think if you go into a scenario and change it via the editor, you can get the right COs in there ships (2 Kiwi CLs) before the game starts or once it is going, swap the ensigns out as early as possible for the two available COs, but you will have to use PPs in order to do so.

Naturally the assignment of the lowest ranking officer possible to command the largest warship in a nation's fleet is just like real.

Admittedly it was 2 years earlier but was the real CO the one that got into a gunfight with the Graf Spee?

The assignment of CO's to Allied ships, planes and LCUs seems to default to the dullest tool in the shed. There certainly was an adequate supply of "ticket punchers" in positions of responsibility when the war began but frankly most of the "deadwood" got put on the back-burner fairly sort order.

Yes, if you go into the editor, Ships Tab, you can quickly reassign the ship's commander to any eligable leader...the trick (if you want to call it a trick) is to find the correct leader in the database.
I found all the historical skippers for Motor TorpedoBoat Squadron 3 - and assigned the proper leaders for each boat (I was moved to do so by the old film 'They Were Expendable'...though the movie changed some names).

EDIT: Great book too

One of my all time favorite movies. I watch it at least once a year. I was able to record the colorized version on TBS back in the day and subsequently burned it to disk. Same with the movie Battleground.

I also am a fan of colorization, but like most things, early attempts have their flaws. For instance...in the "Knute Rockne Story"...when Notre Dame is playing Army...all the uniforms are identical for both teams!

There is also a colorized version of the classic "Wake Island" out there...but it is rare and hard to find.

IMHO the colorized version of Battleground is one of the best examples...but on the colorized version of "The Longest Day"...the 29th ID patch is totally wrong...showing as a red device on Robert Mitchum's uniform.

In this case, it would not have worked for Achilles - the captain was not available until December 1942 - a year
after the war starts. One must fix both the assigned captain AND the date - as described above.

Thank you.

Leander is ship slot 3229 - and indeed has an ensign of moderate ability assigned as captain.
The correct captain IS in the database - Roskill, Stephen W - leader slot 17196
