Does sound file length determine AI animation speed?

Post by jpinard »

I've wondered whether to bring this up, because so much of the game is excellent and I'm not sure if this is nitpicking. But I'm going to write about this as I believe it's something that will be voiced by others - some animations simply take too long. I don't like using fast animation as it feels like it takes away some of the drama and reward of what a large battle builds to. The time it takes for most of animations to play out feels perfect except for a couple of outliers:

* Artillery attack/defense
* Aircraft interception/escort

My hope is that artillery is just tied to the length of time it takes to play the specified sound file. While I love the sound it makes... it just takes too long when you have several + and your whole battle playing out.

Similarly, while it feels better (or maybe I grew more patient) it would be nice if aircraft interception/escorts were completed faster as well.

AAA takes too long as well (I knew I'd forgotten one!).

For interceptions at least two damage calculations must be performed. In case of escorts even three. Add to this the respective sound files and animations. This simply takes more time than a simple "Combat A". It is similar with the defensive artillery fire. The sound files of artillery, anti-aircraft and rocket artillery offer an acoustic multi-fire. This sound files are slightly longer than the single shots of other units. But everything is a matter of taste. You can simply change the sound files and replace them with your own creations...[:)]

Yes and no, there is some sections that have a bit of a longer delay set due to sound effect file length, but ideally and provided there is time I'd implement an Animation Speed slider so it can be better controlled and set to individual preference.
