One thing I have found in my game vs. the AI, if you want to keep pressure on a large enemy air base that you are trying to keep shut down, you really need to have several bases with bombers in range. The weather will keep 2/3 of your attackers grounded or badly fragmented so having one base with good weather is very helpful.ORIGINAL: apbarog
No, it doesn't have to be Navy planes. That's just what I have a bunch of nearby in Australia. I have my B-25s at Timor. I do have a P-39 squadron in the islands off of Milne Bay trained for low naval and strafing. If I go to Rabaul, I want to go with a large number of sweepers, naval bombers for shipping, and heavy bombers for the airfield.

Near Boela, sub S-37 surfaces and engages unescorted xAKL Yamashimo Maru, getting a couple of hits. The sub submerges after taking a very minor gun hit.
Walker shows a little more activity in the Solomons, bombarding Allied troops at Munda. The damage is very minor, and the enemy does not attack there in any other way. Just a nuisance appearance.
In the middle of the South China Sea, sub Halibut attacks a big tanker convoy, and gets two torpedo hits on tanker Kurogana Maru. The tanker was loaded with fuel, and is now almost surely sunk.
At Dobo, a big Tojo squadron sweeps. They find P-38s and P-40Ks. The Tojos do well against the Warhawks, but the P-38s do well against the Tojos. 12 Tojos were downed, while the Allies lost 8 P-40Ks and 3 P-38Gs.

No turn from Walker today. Hopefully tomorrow. We have decided to finally upgrade our game to the latest beta patch. We've been running on a beta patch that is about 2 years old, one that I believe became the latest official patch. So there will be some changes. I haven't gone through the list of what is new. I do know that plotting carrier strikes on strategic targets has changed, allowing targeting from outside the current range. I need to do some reading.

No combat worth mentioning. I did spot 2 task forces just west of Sunda Strait. I see a PB in one and a TK in the other. Odd composition for the location, probably not a good spotting. But something is there, something that warrants more than one task force. Interesting. I've considered that Walker may send some carriers out into the Indian Ocean to sweep east and maybe catch something coming or going to Denpassar. Or just sweep the northwestern coast of Australia. Or it's just a convoy to the islands west of Java. I have subs in the area.

Sub Pargo spots a tanker convoy between Okinawa and Japan. 4 torpedoes are fired at tanker Tsuruha Maru, 1 hits, but it is a dud. At least we're seeing more and more tanker targets now.
North of Japan, sub Mingo spots a big convoy of tiny xAKLs, fires 2 torpedoes at one, but both miss.
Some usual bombing at Koepang and Taberfane, as well as enemy troops stuck inland in New Guinea. By the way, I'm no longer seeing movement from the enemy there. The trapped troops were showing movement to the northwest. No longer. Maybe Walker sees that I reacted and something of mine is moving from Terapo. Maybe that was his plan. I do have a small armor unit moving, hoping to help defend the cordon to the north.
Lots of stuff just shipped into Darwin. Everything I need for my next set of invasions is now where it needs to be, except for one armor unit, which will arrive at Darwin in the next 2 days. Everything is switching to combat mode. When the armor arrives and switches, all will start loading. US carriers are still southwest of Darwin and still unseen.
In the shallows by Phuket, Thailand, I've got double messages of heavy activity. Very unusual for this area of the map, which has been quiet for so long. May be just something big going to Rangoon.
I often talk about the enjoyment of saving badly damaged ships. I can report that all ships used in my Bali and area invasions survived. And the two badly damaged xAPs from the New Guinea coast have made it to Australia and will survive.
I do see a big upswing in detection levels on my subs to the north and south of Rabaul now. I'm moving more combat ships to Milne Bay. I'm just showing the flag here, not planning on anything offensive. CV Victorious will be in the area soon too, just to be seen.
I ran 4 subchasers around the Tarawa area, and for a few days, they weren't even seen. I've suspected that Walker has withdrawn troops from this area. It may have been a massive evacuation. When I get some new reinforcements on the West Coast, something smaller than a division, I will start building up some troops to take some of the islands in the Tarawa area. A very low priority for me, but if they are there for the picking, might as well.

CL Cleveland hit rocks while escorting CV Victorious, south of New Guinea. Cleveland will head to Brisbane for repairs.
North of Japan, sub Mingo spots more small xAKLs, and gets a torpedo hit one one.
Southeast of Palembang, in the straits that hug the coast of Sumatra to the south, destroyer Oyashio is reported to have hit a mine. A Brit sub dropped some mines there a few days ago. Very nice to see that work once in a while. Walker caught on to my minelaying strategies early in this game, and has spent some effort constantly sweeping. Now I just do it occasionally to keep him honest. I've dropped some mines just west of Nagasaki also. Those haven't been found yet.
South of Cam Ranh Bay, sub Shad spots a big convoy of true AKs, but two torpedoes miss the escorting destroyer.

Turns out that the 9th Infantry Division and the 19th Army HQ are still there. My attack goes at only 1 to 17, but the enemy takes 155 casualties, while the armor take only 52. I'll rest. I may have given away the fact that the Marines have left, if Walker didn't know already. I don't know if the armor is vulnerable to a counterattack. The enemy was penalized for supply and fatigue.
Tomorrow we start loading for the next phase.

If you own Townsville he will only have field forts, and not at a high level if he has not been there for a long time.
IJA anti-armour values are not very good against anything but light tanks, and if he is short of supply he won't be upgrading either.
Keep the pressure on - your recovery will be faster than his.

I wasn't clear. The fighting is in the jungle, on the coast, just north of Buna. The 3rd Marine Division had been there, but had taken heavy losses trying to clear the enemey. The 3rd Marines pulled out, and are now recovering at Townsville. I left the 2 armor units, and Walker pulled out some troops to the interior.
I will continue attacking with the armor as soon as they resupply.

Yesterday, an enemy destroyer hit one of my sub mines south of Palembang. Today a small minesweeper arrived and started to clear up the mines.
Near Boela, sub S-47 spots an xAKL task force, and gets a torpedo hit on xAKL Taiyo Maru. Probably sunk.
Tojos arrived over Dobo again, this time two full squadrons. About half of a squadron of P-40Ks and P-38s are on CAP. 10 Tojos are downed, for the loss of 5 P-40Ks and 1 P-38. Allied planes are pulled out to Darwin to rebuild. I'll move fighters back in when I need them, when ships arrive.

No turn from Walker today. I'm looking forward to the Celebes landings. Taking Makassar will put Balikpapan within easy reach, as well as support future landings for Kendari (which will occur right after Makassar, using the same APAs).
I may be trying to go to quickly, but I think that the opportunity is there. Any divisional landing I do now would be a difficult place for Walker to take back. He seems to have pulled all of his real combat ships away from the front lines. I see some cruisers at Rabaul, but that's it. I got multiple SigInt heavy activity messages at Singapore, but that could be cargo ships too.

I sent a DMS to sweep mines at Banjoewangi, at the eastern tip of Java near Denpassar. I'm not invading here soon, but I want to give that impression, a bit.
In the South China Sea, I continue to find tankers. My sub deployments are definitely paying off. Today sub Grayback finds a tanker convoy, fires 2 torpedoes at big tanker Kyokuyo Maru, and gets 2 good hits. And the tanker is loaded with fuel. It is burning and is most probably sinking. Walker's escorts for his tankers have been light, subchasers for the most part, and I'm generally seeing just one per task force. He'll have to start doing more in this area.
SBD's bomb enemy troops on the coast by Buna. My armored units attack again, but get a far different result, getting similar odds (1 to 12), but the armored units lose 8 tanks and 45 are disabled. Instead of no losses last time. Time to rest and recover, and just sit there.
Wirraways bomb Koepang, but get hammered by flak. Koepang may be isolated, but it still has supply. I need to just use heavy bombers here for awhile.

The Makassar invasion armada leaves Darwin today, and meets up with the US carriers to the west of Darwin. A DMS will sweep Koepang as the armada goes by, feinting invasion preparation.
Good recon of Makassar today shows no fighters and about 40 bombers. Corsairs from Denpassar will sweep, and heavies from Lautem will hit the airfield.

Do you know what he has at Ambon? What is the airfield level? It seems the IJ can start a build up and begin the war of attrition ...

If not .. once you get lodged into Celebes the party is over .. because as you know it will become more difficult to built up the more lodged you become

Ambon is a size 4 airfield. Sometimes there are aircraft there. None currently.
Kendari is a size 7 airfield, and has been heavily defended with fighters. Just 43 currently. 30 bombers.
Makassar is a size 5 airfield, with 37 fighters and 43 bombers.
I can send many heavy bombers to any of these targets, and today Makassar is the target. I plan on hitting Kendari next, and hope that both are damaged when I invade Makassar. History has shown that Walker will pull out his planes after I hit an airbase hard, even if the airfield isn't shut down.
Soerbaja is huge. It is a size 8 airfield, and has had about 150 fighters consistently. But Walker hasn't challenged my air at Denpassar. He didn't interfere when I invaded Denpassar, at least with land based air.
Burma is still dead quiet. I continue to send troops from India to Australia.
Walker has the problem that I can go so many directions, and land at so many different targets. He can't defend them all. I assume that he is trying to draw a line somewhere, but I just can't find it. If the line includes Makassar and/or Kendari, and he's reinforced there, it hasn't been enough.
I could start bombing oil. Right now, I think I'll just capture it. A Balikpapan invasion may not be too far in the future, assuming that Makassar and Kendari goes as planned.
Walker must respond strongly, and soon. In my opinion, it's already too late to stop me, but he must try. He hasn't used land based air aggressively. Some on New Guinea, but that is a sideshow for me.

Walker has the problem that I can go so many directions, and land at so many different targets. He can't defend them all. I assume that he is trying to draw a line somewhere, but I just can't find it. If the line includes Makassar and/or Kendari, and he's reinforced there, it hasn't been enough.
I could start bombing oil. Right now, I think I'll just capture it. A Balikpapan invasion may not be too far in the future, assuming that Makassar and Kendari goes as planned.
Walker must respond strongly, and soon. In my opinion, it's already too late to stop me, but he must try. He hasn't used land based air aggressively. Some on New Guinea, but that is a sideshow for me.

One thing is to build up the airfield at Soerbaja .. the other (because of DBB and no 10% supply bonus from refining) is having sufficient supplies at strategic bases.
For example, supplies to take aircraft from the pool let alone conduct operations .. and soon it will be very difficult to bring any into this area ..

The only place where I've recently gotten SigInt that a new division was arriving was at Batavia. A division that was heading to Singapore ended up at Batavia. So I know that Java has been reinforced recently. And I'm ok with that. I went to Denpassar to threaten Java, and I think that has worked. I'm not going to Java in the near future. Java won't be cut off with my immediate plans, but it will be bypassed. For awhile, at least.
I have no doubt that Walker can get supply into Java, though. Through Batavia. Places like Koepang and Taberfane, though. No. They are essentially isolated from almost everything except sub transport.
