The USSR is a single country. It is a much faster play.

It also does not get into a fight till later in most games. It is easier by far.

The only reason I recommended the four nation play is the comments that it was so "unstoppable".

As USSR is only one nation it is easier to organize armies, production, supply and techs, imho. What do you think, Chuck?

It might take some time for the first turn to set all production lines, move armies where you want them to be and maybe change structure of some armies. As USSR will be save the first turns, there should be enough time to change first decisions in case you think you had a better idea. But of course if you choose USSR it means you will be the evil communist! And sooner or later it will be my duty to protect Poland, the Balkan and the Baltic nations from the threat of communism. I will do my best to fulfill this glorious duty.

I will start the game tomorrow evening, as I am first, no matter, who plays what.
So it will be version 221y, settings: FoW on, PBEM Protection on, Passwords on, Old Victory Codiitons on. You are ok with that?
Means you should not forget to chose a victory condiitons card at first turn, as otherwise AI will do it for you. And you might not be happy with it [;)]

Have already an idea how to start. A bit out of the usual way. Curious to see how it works.

My Soviet play usually includes :

A nice "Five Year Plan" to build the Soviet economy is always a good idea - "Improve economy" and annex building "Improve city".

Improve the quality of the Red Army. Get some important cards - superior doctrine is a big one.

Try and get some real estate by diplomacy - Turkey is my biggest goal as a Soviet.

Get the all important KV-1 and some nice tank factories.

Research improved aircraft as soon as you can.

Don't let the Germans in the Baltic states, and "hold your nose" and split Poland when Germany offers a pact. In this game Germay and the USSR must break apart after Poland. Declare war, with a peace offer immediately.

I remember quite well game 20, where Falco as leader of Italy sent lots of his weak tanks against the powerful KV-1. He fought bravely but suffered heavy losses. But he kept on pushing.
I tried to support as good as possible sending shockwaves of StuKas and stabilizing the front with PzIV where ever possible. Great fight for the Balkan! That was fun.

These KV-1 are hard nuts to crack for German tanks. But beware of the StuKas if you dont want to see your heavy tanks go up in flames.

Very well, USSR it is.

Looking to the future, when it gets to my turn, are either of you available for questioning about the basics? Alternatively, is there a very detailed AAR someone has done that highlights the proper general strategy for this mod?

@tortugapower,

I am sure either of us will be happy to chat about strategy with you.

The play has changed over time. In General the Axis is the aggressor, and I am certain Rufus means to follow that pattern. Poland is stronger than it was in earlier versions and play has altered to allow Poland more time to exist. Denmark may well be the first target, perhaps the Netherlands. At some point, usually well before 1940 France will be challenged by the Germans, and perhaps the Italians. If Italy does enter hostilities with the West then North Africa becomes an important campaign.

You will be playing the USSR and your overriding task is to prepare for a massive invasion by the Axis. There have been very few instances where this has occurred early in the game. Germany almost certainly will fight a campaign in the West first. Metropolitan France often falls to the Axis, and Germany will have solidified the eastern European satellites before she turns to some sort of Barbarossa. Who knows what will happen.

The Soviet turn for you to play s in the Dropbox folder. Have fun!

If you are having any problems please let us know.

Are you familiar with Dropbox for turns?

I wasn't having problems with Dropbox, just a delay with getting back on this one. I tried to hammer it out Friday night but didn't get there. Normal turnaround will be 24 hours; weekends end up being very busy for me (a bit backwards).

I'm uploading the ready-to-go save to dropbox. Also, I opened the savegame a second time -- I updated Steam while the game was open and that unfortunately closes the game without notification.

Also, should we open up an AAR to be game-related discussions?

@ tortugapower

I know the crashes due to Steam updates quite well. A bit enoying.

There is already an AAR: GD1938 Game 25 old VC
Feel free to add posts. There are already some hits, so it looks like some players follow this one.
