Why did I wait so long to buy this?

Post by rommel222 »

Greetings to All,
I just purchased, installed and played into game for 5 hours straight and look forward to a lifetime (what little is left in old age) of exploring the universe. DWU is amazing in depth and scope. I played Armada 2526 w/Supernova expansion and liked it but felt it was limited but was hesitant to try DW when it was first released and provided w/expansions. So I held off for a couple of years based on posts of bugs/crashes. However, DWU installed and ran with no problems on my win 10 64-bit Toshiba laptop: i5 w/8 Megs ram & Intel 4200 integrated graphics.
But I wish to thank all for your posts of game play & videos & AARs which are what finally convinced me to take the plunge. I started Space Exploration games on my Commodore C-64 with SSI's Reach for the Stars. I then moved on to Windows computers and enjoyed Matrixgames Starships Unlimited. Then went to Galactic Civilizations II but not as much fun but good depth. Tried X3 series but grew frustrated with very slow pace and tedious routines. But DWU is tops in my list now.
And as a soon to be first time grandparent of twin boys this December I have DWU to occupy my time when not babysitting and changing diapers. I just hope I do not get so engrossed playing DWU that I forget to check on the soon to come twins when babysitting.[:)]

When I first loaded the original DW I loved it. I go for games that are Strategic in nature and DW filled the space game spot. Congrats on the twins. I have to April for my grandchild....GP

Welcome to Distant Worlds! [:)]

I feel that the most important thing for me in a 4X game is choice, and DW has that in spades. So many paths to take, so many different ways of pursuing the victory, so many different ways of traversing the tech trees.
Like you, I came up through the ranks playing older games like Master of Orion, Spaceward Ho, Galactic Civilizations, Stars!, etc. and I simply love Distant Worlds for it's depth while allowing me to automate the parts I'm not interested in. Also, I've found it very stable.

Welcome again.

Welcome on board. The game is addictive.
I began old school. Found Avalon Hill's board game, PanzerBlitz, in'72. Haven't stopped since. [:D]
Congrats on your upcoming twins. Hope you have many years enjoying both them and the game.
I once heard there was a garage, which some said was air tight.

No mention of Space Empires from anyone on their path to nirvana, i.e. Distant Worlds?

I still play SEIV. I can't see why I'd stop. Maybe if DW2 added stellar manipulation I'd think about stopping.

Greetings to All,
Thanks for all your posts. After another 25 hours of playing my first introductory game I am totally immersed and addicted. I never bother to turn on the TV (w/rabbit ears = 24 channels) anymore.
If anyone is on the fence with DWU get off it and buy![:)]

Greetings to All,
I have only played about 4 hours more since I was recently diagnosed with CLL= Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Good news is that it is Stage 0 and I have no symptoms...yet! https://www.cancer.gov/types/leukemia/p ... atment-pdq Still more blood tests & cat scans.
So having DWU will be good therapy for CLL wait/watch therapy. Also, looking forward to twin boys in less than 2 months but they are in the breech position so my daughter will need a c-section birth. Wife and I will watch them when daughter goes back to work to save on day care $$$$ for twins.
Enjoy reading AARs and modding ideas in the forums as well.

Get well soon. Hopefully catching it early will work in your favor. I'm a grandpa as well and every time I see them it's a challenge, but always fun.

Greetings Retreat1970,
Thanks for your thoughts and I count every day as gravy and take it one day at a time. I am sure my wife and I will be anxious, perplexed and frustrated being 1st time grand parents of twins (double trouble). But it will be worth every second of it!
Now back to DWU and my attempt to rule the galaxy![:D]

A little OT. I still have SEIV on Steam, even if it is years since my last playthrough. I'm going to try it again out of curiosity (I'm deep into DW:U now), but I remember that some Mods made it really shine. Sadly, I don't remember which ones (the joys of aging I guess). Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

After DW it's hard to play SE4. It's a great game but it is 16 years old. Go to spaceempires.net for all you need. I have an old laptop just for this game (and internet).
