The Texan (AT-6) had a stressed metal skin, that's fabric covered. It looks like a primary trainer aircraft, but I'm not sure which one. Definitely a monoplane which rules out the Steerman, which is the best known.

In the 1920s - 30s Lexington and Saratoga apparently had biplane bombers and in pictures posted on this forum they had bright yellow wings (IIRC). But women would not have been in factories then so I assume that pic is from the 1940s - but the aircraft could have been an old one being refurbished for use as a trainer.

The whole picture is surely staged for marketing/propaganda purposes? The woman was probably either the best looking woman the photography team could find at the plant, else a model they brought with them from Hollywood!

Surely that paint was applied in a more assembly line fashion, probably with sprayers and almost certainly with a stencil when it comes to the star (well, two stencils, first a circle to get the white on top of the yellow, then the star with circle blocked to get the black star legs).

If they literally had some dollish Rosie the Riveter painting all the stars on their airplanes we would've lost the war!

I was thinking that refurbishing old fabric covered planes would be contracted out to small companies while the big ones had their massive assembly lines. A small company might not have bothered buying paint spraying equipment for a small, one-time contract.
Agree with the choice of pretty woman and staging of the photo for propaganda or advertising purposes.

They did this by hand with no gloves - and had their nail polish on! That's confidence - I get paint all over my hands when I use a brush!

Curtiss-Wright AT-9 looks metal.. smooth.


I though a biplane at first because of the fabric and the ribs are so prominent.

PT-19 Cornell monoplane is close but I dont see the framing as much.


Could it be the wing of a disassembled biplane?
