I play for fun.. and if the scenario is fair I care not if I win or lose. Being a veteran of many wargames in the recent past, I did get a bit c ocky when I first started playing SPWAW. Particularly not being used to using infantry as spotters for my tanks got me into trouble. But I soon adapted to this necessity. Right now Id'say I'm a tenacious little bugger :D , especially when pressed into retreat LOL.

I did wave a white flag at Jim on the D Day scenario we played, since on turn 2 of 40 he already had men off the beaches and 90% of my coastal defenses were already gone.. Can't defend when I do not have defenses..

I ussually win

Post by Gary Tatro »

But I lose on the occation to some very good players, Viking No2, Jim Linquest, and the evil Buzzardoo!
I know a lot about the mechanics of the game and as most of my opponents can tell you I am patient, waiting for a chance to deal a crushing blow.
I also tend to try to give my opponents tips and suggestions on how to improve there game play. Thus making better players all around. Jim Linquest is a good example of a supperb student who has come back and beat me in our most recent game. :D

That is not true I gave you a lot of suggestions. I think I remember one of them right now. "Don't take an M4 to a tank fight" :D :D :D

Jess don't you have a turn to do?

Mostly win

Post by VikingNo2 »

I win often, and lose every now and then, but as Gary said I will give tips on how I feel my opponents can inprove their play, and accept any pointers as well. Still need to work on coordinating my arty a little better.

Gary and V2 are the only ones to beat me so far (in a fair fight, IIRC), but I haven't really played bunches of people; maybe a dozen or so only. Gary's the only one I haven't beaten, although it's only been one try (I'm too scared to go back to that well.;) )

I'm a 50/50 kind of guy.

I let 'em win the first one to give them a false sense of security (read: they beat the crap out of me until I figure out their method)

From there on out, I can give as good as I get.

Some things I've noticed along the way:

The first player has a decided advantage in being able to post units towards the middle of the playing field early. This generates momentum that can sometimes be difficult to overcome against a skilled player.

I am forever being outflanked. I'm not sure why this is, but it seems consistent.

One player or the other will establish a 'tempo' for the battle. That player will usually win in the end. My advice? Be the one with the drum. :D
