Osaka/Kyoto. Some planes strayed due to night but many found Osaka/Kyoto and Fires peaked at nearly 77,000.

So, you don't need a bigger picture now, right? XD

Planning to leave Shangai alone or not? You certainly are moving troops towards other directions, so I have to ask.

Exactly! [:D]
No, there are lots of Chinese Army units on their way to Shanghai. They are mostly newly released units with 40 exp although I expect morale to be 99 before they attack. All preparing for Shanghai but that will take beyond the first attack to reach 100%. I'm toying with the idea of giving them some Allied artillery support, which I figure they will need, but I plan to move almost all Allied units in the Home Islands.

Shanghai

Why do you need to take it anytime soon? The forces there cannot do anything and will gradually wither. It needs a large garrison, so why not just turn it into a POW camp and as your spare Chinese get there and prep every day the enemy position gets weaker.

Yes, I don't plan to be overzealous. I don't know how much longer the game will run and I figure it will take the Chinese Army (critically short on heavy weapons, low on squad firepower, low on experience, low on strong combat leaders, etc.) quite a while to crack that nut. The RN will help out and so will some degree of Allied air power, but I want to get things underway because the Chinese Army will need all the time it can get. It will still be a few weeks before the horde preparing for Shanghai are in place. Some are still marching to Tuyun. Other are marching from Changsha. I can have new arrivals march to Wuchang then rail to Soochow to save time (now that the rail line through Hankow is open).

I did my best to reduce supply generation in Shanghai as low as I could get it, so hopefully the lot there is well underfed already. I won't know that until the first attack.

Regardless of any supply generated at Shanghai, the IJA troops there will recover disablements much more slowly if there are Allied troops in the hex. So just putting the Chinese troops in there and bombarding can really help grind the IJA.

Good point that I hadn't considered. Pretty soon there will be enough Chinese Army AV on site to defend itself while waiting for the rest. There is an RN slow-BB bombardment being delivered tonight to get things rolling.

I used to detest China, indeed I pretty much ignored it in my most long running game for the first year - then I realised how similar it is to the Oriental game of Go and grew to love it! Its all about sente and killing the eyes.

Ok, for we who are not so much exposed to foreign language/philosophy, you are going to have to explain. I did find that sente as a Japanese word means initiative or first moves. But the "Killing the Eyes" part just got me links to various video games involving shooting out some monster's eyes. Are you implying that the Chinese need to have "unseen movement"?

Sorry, Go is about capturing intersections on a board and any group of stones (your units) will hold territory if they have two viable spaces (eyes) that cannot be filled as each player places one stone per move. So if a group is isolated they can be safely left to be 'dead' at the end of the game. If a group is viable then they can always pose a threat by other lines of stones developing towards them. That's a very very simplified version.

So in China once you take Sente (initiative) and hold it you can happily isolate the enemy forces and by use of the hex sides you can make them rooted to a hex and thus unable to have any effect on the situation - so they are dead in the same way as a group of stones which only have one eye is dead and merely awaiting execution. In my oldest China game there are loads of Japanese forces that are simply sat in hexes and unable to do anything - and I am simply leaving them to rot on their own. I do not need to expend any energy as they cannot do anything.

Shanghai can be very important, but can also be irrelevant depending on the state of play around there. In Witpqs game I suggest that it is a dead stone and can be safely left unless there is a need to take it for its points/shipyard/logistics.

Go eyes

And because you (not really) promised not to leave any red dots on the map.

You didn't think we'd forget that, right? [:D]

Thanks for the explanation Roger, but since I do NOT want my stones to be dead I will stay away from that game! [;)]

China Outback. Our Allied armoured units are splitting up to bypass Urumchi and take Wasu and Kashgar. That will both deny the garrison at Wasu a reteat vector and allow supply to flow from the Soviet base at Alma-Ata. Does it do that? Is that part of the western Chinese desert supply?

China east. There is no flak coming up from Shanghai to raids at 10,000 ft. I think they are out of supply!
