Right. Jim and I decided to test our mettle in the Tunisian desert! So here goes..

Turn 1 for the Germans..

Oberschutze Uli and Grenadier Hermann are sitting in their foxholes as they suddenly hear their commander's voice: "Grab your weapons.. we have orders to move.. LOSS LOSS LOSS!" As hermann reaches for their gear, Uli replies: "Jawohl, herr Hauptmann!", saluting his senior. Together they hastily head for the nearby halftrack and mount up...

Dust flies up as the armored column gets moving. In the distance left and right of their position they also see dustclouds. Whatever they are going to do, it is part of a larger operation. Not soon after they've started moving, the commanding officer of the squad starts explaining where they are going and what is expected of them..

The vehicles soon hit the town of Hordj Chambi and as the halftrack reaches the other side of town, it is fired upon! "Amerikaner! Return fire, schnell! Beeilt euch!". The men scramble from their vehicle and start firing at the building. Some American scouts run for their lives, only to be met bij more German spearhead troops and they finally disperse.

Meanwhile, in ruins near Hordj Chambi, a German infantry squad discoveres more Allied units. The weakened defenders are scattered as the Germans storm the ruins, taking some casualties in the process. A mortar nest is taken out and other defenders are sent running.

far on the other side of the battlefield, German scouts find Hill 974 occupied by a very nasty AT gun, who takes out on of the German scoutvehicles with a single shot! The German commander there is furious at this, and blames the scoutvehicle's driver for his own loss claiming he shouldn't have painted it that bright pink and yellow color the other day..

Feb 18,1943

Another hot day in the desert, grumbles Colonel Conroy under his breath. Christ, it's still February.

Headquarters tells me I can expect German probing from the North at anytime. Ha, what do they know. Still I bettter get Lt. Jenkins to send out a patrol or 2 and see what the Krauts are up to.

30 mins later, a breathless runner from one of the recon platoons comes running in to see the Lt.

Sir, we've got a 3 pronged attack coming in from Si Herrat to the North West, BordJ Chambi from the North and Olad Mousa from the North East. Commin' in fast sir.

We have identified some armored cars 221's,222's, and 231's as well as Panzer Mark II's and what appear to be Mark1's. Marder class TD's are coming in from the NW along with infantry. And a whole mess of halftracks.

Son, get back out there and kick some @ss. I gotta go tell the Colonel.

From the ruins near hill 712 in the northwest come some very disturbing reports of heavy resistance. This may become a tough fight! Artillerly is called in to soften up targets.

"It seems the Americans have noticed our appr.." KABLAM! A sounds roars accross the desert as one of the lead panzers gets blow to tiny bits. The armoured column commander (or rather, his replacement) decides to take evasive manoeuvres. The vehicles' occupants collectively sh*t their pants as a scoutcar and another Panzer 1 gets blow off the road. O dear.. and this so early in the battle!

In the east things are stepping up. Infantry scrambles up hill 974, supported by numerous self propelled guns and a couple of scoutcars. It is the German commanders sincere hope the taking of this hill will be more of a success than the rest of the force has achieved so far. Must be the heat or something. The maen are just not themselves today...

Colonel Conroy, we're starting to get heavy pressure towards Hill 974. Pressure is increasing all along the front, sir.
Yes sir, our AT boys are starting to shine. Lt. Koonce has 4 with his 57mm and Sgt Ward has 2 with his. The enemy is starting to drop 75mm on our front positions.

"This looks like it may be a lot more than a probe", muses Colonel Conroy.

"Orderly", he barks, "Get me General Housley on the radio, pronto. We got a major incursion coming our way and we need support."

..... "General?, this is Conroy. That's right , sir. I need all the heavy stuff you can spare up here. I've got the DAK making my forward positions look like anthills. We'll hold sir. Just get those tanks up here as soon as they can make it, sir. Conroy out."

Both hills come under heavy fire as the Germans scramble up the hillsides.

On the eastern hill, defenders start running as German armour punches through alongside the infantry...

Meanwhile, on the western hill, Uli and Hermann hang on to their stahlhelmets as m1 mortar fire falls on their heads. When the shelling is over, the Germans race up the hill, but they cannot seem to pinpoint the vanished defenders!

The limited progress of the German troops may buy the Americans time to reinforce! To make matters worse, an artillery barage falls short of it's target and the German troops have to take cover from their own mortarfire!

Pressure is building along entire frontline, although the strongest push appears to be concentrated towards Hill 974 in the Western sector. American Squads are making the Krauts pay dearly for every inch of ground gained.

Hill 712 sector is fairly quiet to this point.

End of turn post-artillery comments:

Heavy shelling of Hill 712 occurs, signalling a probable strong combined arms push to the East mirroring the action on Hill 974 to the West.

The GI's hunker down in their holes, awaiting the end of the barrage and sensing the approach of yet another group of DAK veterans.

"LOSS GEHTS! Grifft an!!!" yells the commander of Uli and Hermann's unit, as they scramble out of cover and onto the hill. The probe of hill 712 is complete, the US foxholes are mapped out and the Olad Moussa force is ordered to advance behind the probe force. In a complete mad dash for quick victory, some of the armored units race up the hillside, not bothering to wait for the infantry assault. An AT gun fires at them in vain. Nothing can stop these mad dogs of war!

Meanwhile, German troops at hil 914 press their assault, forcing US squads out of their foxholes. Armor races up, again with the infantry close behind, scattering any US troops they can target.

Reinforcements arrive on the battlefield.

Can the Allies change history? It remains to be seen. Axis reinforcements have preceeded the Allied ones to the battlefield.

German advance continues to increase in fury, with forward positions on both hills being overrun. American casualties are starting to mount. AT fire is still effective, but for how long?

Mark III Panzers are spotted to the North, but the 1st group of American reinforcements have arrived on the battlefield.

Right.. well..

The German advance is again reinforced by new units on the battlefield. Both hills are under pressure still, but the Germans cannot seem to force a breakthrough just yet. Small victories are subsequently followed by (mostly armored) small losses.

Hopefully things will improve with the next arty barrage..
