53rd (Sep) Inf Rgt has been released from West Coast to SoPac, to deal with pesky Japanese in Tahiti by request of Free French Forces. It will ship as soon as transportation is available.

ComSubPac has messaged to SACPAC that there seems to be something wrong with our torpedoes, since some sub commanders are getting very aggressive with surface gunnery.

Investigative team is formed and will give it's recommendation in few months. Meanwhile, SACPAC is considering between either removing LtCdr Mendelhall from command for extreme aggressiveness or decorating him. Decisions will be based on investigative team's findings.

To his dismay, SACPAC was informed by Naval Construction staff that redeployment of USS Yorktown and USS Enterprise will be delayed because of impeding refits for US CV force next month.

After some pondering, all 5 US CVs will stay safely in PH air and flak umbrella until refits. Consideration was made against immediate operational concerns vs. approximate 50% increase in ship AAA power. Operational concerns were not deemed enough to risk CVs without big increase in their defensive ability.

This will also allow more time for ANZAC forces (combined US, AUS and NZ) to concentrate more ships for upcoming operations.

RN flash message informs us that they have sunk IJN minisub in Bombay harbour. Defensive measures have increased, since Bombay is our troop transport hub.

SACPAC congratulates Bill Slim, one of the least acknowledged, least appreciated and one of the most brilliant UK main generals during WW II for wiping out Japanese in Rangoon.

As historical notion, I myself think he was way better than e.g. Montgomery but Churchill didn't really like him after 1941/42 Burma debacle. He really rise to be remarkable in 1944 and later.

However, in November 1948 the British Prime Minister Clement Attlee rejected the proposal by Viscount Montgomery that he should be succeeded as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) by John Crocker and instead brought back Slim from retirement in the rank of field marshal in January 1949[40] with formal appointment to the Army Council from 1 January 1949.[41] Slim thus became the first Indian Army officer to be become CIGS.[39]

But the biggest boost to morale was the burly man who came to talk to the assembled battalion … it was unforgettable. Slim was like that: the only man I've ever seen who had a force that came out of him...[63] British soldiers don't love their commanders much less worship them; Fourteenth Army trusted Slim and thought of him as one of themselves, and perhaps his real secret was that the feeling was mutual.[64]

SACPAC has sent scathing message to Louis Mountbatten, Commander of SEAC, because it was not reported that Cape Town is now out of fuel. Australian Prime Minister Curtin has also expressed his dismay about this military logistic blunder.

On positive side, SS S-47 reports 2 torpedo hits to IJN CV Zuikaku. Since no smoke or fire was detected, results are inconclusive.

IJN CV efforts against PM continue strong and AVD Preston in harbour was seriously damaged, further reducing Allied aviation support.

Oct 4, 1942

There were no less than 4 (!) IJN midget subs detected inside Colombo harbour. They hit BB Ramilles and BB Revenge. Ramilles was lightly damaged, but Revenge will be spending a month in dry-dock. Officer in charge of harbour security is now the new Naval attache in Katmandu, Nepal.

1st and 2nd Marine Divisions are just about arriving to Sydney. 53rd (Sep) Inf Rgt is commencing attack in Tahiti with Free French. They are expecting short battle and some R&R there.

Midway and Adak I. are growing nicely and are soon able to function as submarine forward bases.

In SWPac, Gen. MacArthur is planning to recombine whole 8th AUS Division when 2 battalions are transferred to there and 2 replacement armoured regiments will take their place.
