What is the requirement for a deliberate attack?

Post by Mike_B20 »

In a PBEM game I loaded some RCT troops onto a sub and transported them to a Japanese base.
When they arrived they had something like 1300 supplies !
I did not send any supplies with them, the supplies were a turn behind.
They comprised a squad of infantry and 2 squads of mortars but the only attack they were capable of was a bombardment attack.
Why couldn't I order a deliberate attack?

Also, I had all sorts of problems setting up a sub transport to deliver supplies. The sub refused to leave port.
I ended up having to change the mission to sub patrol after they had loaded the supplies in order to get the sub to move.

So, noone else has had problems with small infantry detachments unable to capture a hex with the 'Deliberate Attack' command?

Or is it just that noone is going to tell me why small detachments cannot use deliberate attack because I'm such a whiny tosser?:)

As long as there is at least a single squad of grunts, you can order a deliberate attack. Was the single squad disabled perhaps? The only part of the unit considered capable is the US Army Squad.

I routinely use partial units (1 dd worth) to mop up dot bases behind the front line just to eliminate the possibility of ships dropping anchor to put out fires and repair floatation damage.

Only way to counter Allied damage control is to not allow them anywhere to stop ;)

Thanks for the info about needing 1 inf squad Mr Frag.

I actually tried 2 sub troop transfers to swipe undefended bases that game, both times picked up from an RCT unit, both times the troops comprised 1 inf squad and 2 mortars.

From memory, they were all fully fit on landing but both times the 'Deliberate Attack' option was blanked out.
They could Bombard ok though.

When landed without supplies the troops showed as having plenty , 1300 (!) supplies on them.

I followed up with more supplies later but those guys refused to take the hexes.

The fact that Bombard was available but Deliberate/Shock was not tells me only the Gun squads were not disabled, but the grunts were disabled or simply a partial unit. Subs carry such a small number it is quite possible that the guns hogged the space.
