Naval units in harbour

Naval units in harbour

Post by The Land »

Can anyone tell me what the rules are regarding attacking naval units in harbours? I always seem to end up hitting the harbour rather than the naval unit - is there a way around that?

Seems strange that there are a number of events that simulate attacks on ports e.g. the Taranto raid, but that it doesn't appear to work well when you make the same attack with actual units.

Taranto was an air raid, and when you try it, you will find out that ships in harbor are sitting duck against air attacks.
What you experience is steaming through coastal mine fields, being harrased by naval shore batteries etc.

So if you want to attack the naval unit in a harbor, use your air force or CVs instead.

Can't answer the question but I had a BB in the port of Tobruk and an AI land unit next to it damaged the BB with an attack. At least the AI knows how to attack a ship in a port! [:)]

Land units attacking ships is realistic - there wasn't an example in World War I or II but there was in the Russo-Japanese War. If an infantry division's artillery can put observed fire into a harbour full of battleships, the ships are in trouble - as the shells plunge down onto the ships' decks, while their armour is mainly on the sides....

Hi

Naval units attacking enemy ships in port have a 10% chance of damaging the ship as well as the port, and this % chance increases by 10% per level of Naval Weaponry research.

As Xwormwood mentioned above, this represents your first having to get past the local mine fields and shore batteries.
