A couple days ago the Allies booted the Japanese from Colombo. For over a month, El Lobo has been pulling his Japanese off of Ceylon. Recon flights indicate that El Lobo has two ground force units left on Ceylon. One unit (6,380 Troops, 48 Guns, and 8 AFVs) is the Japanese Regiment booted from Colombo which is now one hex Northeast of Colombo. The other unit (5,580 Troops, 36 Guns, and 10 AFVs) is at Koggala. The Allies haven't reinforced Ceylon. This date, the only Allied Infantry on Ceylon (the 98th, 99th, and 100th Indian Brigades) were given orders to march to Koggala.

El Lobo has dropped so many bombs on Chengtu and Chungking that my poor Chinese in these two cities are now all deaf.

Allied artillery shelled Shwebo, the jungle just East of Ramree Island, and Lashio.

Allied ground forces have circled their wagons around the Japanese, but I am not quite sure if the Japanese are trapped or if I have trapped the Allies.

El Lobo has a minimum of 111 Japanese Ground Force units in Burma (includes 5 units one hex West of Paoshan).

The Japanese have a minimum of 15 Infantry Divisions, 3 Infantry Regiments, Naval Guard Units, and intelligence indicates that 2 Infantry Regiments and 21 Infantry Brigades are loading for Rangoon.

I have left behind in India a few Indian Infantry Divisions, four Chinese Corps, and some armor in case El Lobo should attempt to invade India in an attempt to cut supply flowing from India into Burma.

However, as I suspected from day one, and as El Lobo’s actions to date indicate, El Lobo prefers to modestly expand his Evil Empire. El Lobo chose to establish a tight, interlocking defense within which he has less turf to defend, more resources available to defend the turf that he chooses to defend, and within which his troops can more rapidly and more easily reinforce each other. He also has more engineers available to quickly build forts, ports, and airbases at those locations he intends to defend. Also, please note that for over a month, El Lobo has been pulling his forces out of Ceylon. Only two Japanese Infantry Regiments remain on Ceylon. My best guess is that El Lobo does not have any intent to set foot in India.

I have been patient in Burma because I do not merely want to boot El Lobo from India. I want to trap and destroy as many Japanese forces in Burma as possible so that I need not fight them elsewhere. Accordingly, I have spent a great deal of time in an effort to fully envelope the Japanese in Northern Burma. I want to choke El Lob’s supply paths and substantially hinder avenues of Japanese retreat. I had hoped that Allied artillery and Allied bombers would have a substantial effect on supply and on the health of El Lobo’s troops. Unfortunately, to date, Allied artillery and bombing results have been most dismal.

Upon the Allies entrance into Burma, I wanted to give El Lobo the impression that my primary initial targets were Shwebo and Ramree Island. However, my primary goal was to envelope his northern forces and my first base target has always been Lashio.

I chose Lashio for three main reasons. First, Lashio was and remains the most isolated Japanese base in Burma. Therefore, making it the easiest base for the Allies to deny supply and reinforcements. Second, I believed and still believe, it is critical to deny Japanese troops in China from reinforcing Burma. Third, Lashio will be the primary Burma base from which the Allies will invade China. I wanted to have as much time as possible to build-up the fort (for drawing supply) and airbase (from which to bomb China) at Lashio. Lashio has been fully surrounded by Allies for over two months. I suspect that supply is reaching a critical point for the Japanese trapped in Lashio?

At some point, and soon I would think, El Lobo will make his move to break the ever tightening stranglehold on his northern forces. I suspect that El Lobo will be able to manage breakthrough points. However, the Allies will have the benefit of terrain factors when he attacks. Further, the Allies have positioned themselves with the ability to easily reinforce each other and hopefully slow down his retreat so that as many as possible Japanese forces can be destroyed.

El Lobo has dedicated a substantial amount of Japanese ground forces to China and Burma. Additionally, El Lobo has wisely prosecuted his case in China and he has positioned his forces well in Burma. Further, once El Lobo chooses a course of action, he can be extremely stubborn about wavering from such course of action. I have known him for over 50 years and have played enough Chess games with him to know that he would make a formidable Japanese foe. I never expected anything less from El Lobo.

China and Burma have proven to be tough nuts to crack. However, I am fighting El Lobo where I wanted to fight him. And, I take some pleasure from knowing that the Allies have tied-up a great deal of El Lobo’s assets in Burma and China. Hopefully, this will prove to be fruitful when the Allies land Operation Sea Shark forces on Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam on or about June 15, 1943.

My biggest fear is the effect that the Monsoon Season will have on Allied troops.

Will the Allied plan for Burma be successful?

Hell, I don’t know.

Not only are they agile, but possibly their draft is to shallow for torpedo settings?

How come Bombay and Calcutta—large ports and plenty of supply—are unable to manufacture more MGB? I note Oz can produce PT-boats, but not MGBs—so it's something to do with India or MGBs or both?

(I also had a wild plan to hit Ramree's shipping from Akyab—is Rio's muted enthusiasm due to him legitimately sensing a suicide mission?)

El Lobo cut way back on his bombing runs in China today. He only raided Chengtu once and only raided Chungking once.

The Allies now have 1 squadron of bombers and over 200 Warhawks at airbases in Burma. Over 200 Fortress and Liberators are at the bases in India along the Imphal-Ledo line.

The Allies continue to rain artillery shells on Shwebo, the jungle hex just East of Ramree Island, and on Lashio.

El Lobo now has a minimum of 125 Japanese Ground Force units in Burma (includes 5 units one hex West of Paoshan), an increase of 14 units since the last update on February 20, 1943 entitled "Burma 111".

The Japanese have a minimum of 15 Infantry Divisions, 3 Infantry Regiments, Naval Guard Units, and intelligence indicates that 2 Infantry Regiments and 21 Infantry Brigades are loading for Rangoon.

Although I do not have confirmation, I suspect that the increase in Japanese troops is due to El Lobo evacuating Ceylon and shipping those three plus Infantry Divisions and supporting units to Burma. If my suspicion is correct, El Lobo now has a minimum of 18 Infantry Divisions in Burma.

For the moment, Magwe is cut off from getting oil to Rangoon. I do suspect that will not last too long.

Opening Notes


A slow day.

El Lobo bombed Chengtu twice and Chungking twice.

Allied artillery shelled Shwebo, the jungle East of Ramree Island, and Lashio.

To date, as known by the Allies, El Lobo only has one weak spot in Burma, that weak spot being Lashio. Lashio has approximately 550 Japanese AV, has been surrounded by the Allies for approximately two months, must be getting low on supply, and so far the Allies have prevented the Japanese from reinforcing Lashio.

The remaining Japanese bases in Burma are so interconnected by roads that El Lobo can easily and quickly shift his troops to reinforce each other prior to the Allies being able to mount a sufficient attack force against any given base.

The immediate Allied objectives for Burma are as follows:

1.) Keep Lashio isolated and capture Lashio.

2.) Isolate Shwebo and capture Shwebo.

3.) Continue to prevent the Magwe Oil Center from moving oil to Rangoon.

4.) Continue to sever Northern Burma from Southern Burma.

Japanese assault Boela.

El Lobo stepped-up his bombing campaign with numerous bombing raids on Chengtu, Chungking, and the jungle just East of Ramree Island.

Allied lead lands on Shwebo, the jungle just East of Ramree Island, and on Lashio.

In preparation for Operation Sea Shark presently scheduled to bare its teeth on or about June 15, 1943, the Allies are sending one Base Force, one Seabee, one Fighter Squadron, and one Search Squadron to Wake, Midway, Canton, Shortlands, and Rabaul. Wake and Midway will also have a Defense Battalion. Further, Wake will have two Search Squadrons. Additionally, orders have been given to the U.S. Navy to fully fuel and supply these islands.

Question One

Hypothetically, if the Japanese at Lashio were forced to retreat right now, would they be able to retreat or would they all be destroyed?

I think that they could retreat.

Question Two

Right now, by land, is any supply getting to the Japanese at Shwebo?

I think the answer is no.
