Airgroup Transfer Help

Post by TheBug67 »

Hello, I just recently purchased WITP:AE at the holiday sale and I have been trying to wrap my head around the game. So far I have been able to find answers to most thing by searching or in the manual, but I have a quick question about air group transfers. I kinda understand what's going on but I'm just looking for some clarity. I transferred a P39 group from Australia to New Guinea and it split the group leaving a 2 aircraft in Australia. The 2 aircraft left behind were the 2 damaged airframes of the group so I understand why they were left behind, but I don't understand what I am to do with the fragment. Do I just disband it and have the damaged planes merge with another P39 squadron there? Will it eventually repair and allow me to fly it over to New Guinea to rejoin the rest of the squadron? The CO of the squadron is left behind in the fragment so if I disband it what happens to him? If I wait till the fragment repairs itself so I can fly it over, will having the CO be separated affect the main unit?

I have been spending a week looking at the first turn of the stock Guadalcanal scenario trying to figure things out before actually playing the turn. I started today with trying to get the air groups situated and this came up

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance for any offered.

P.S. Is it me or does this BBS editor not have a line wrap in the post new thread?

You can only merge the fragment(s) with the parent unit. If you have aviation support at that base then yes, those damaged airframes will repair and you can fly them out to New Guinea to link up with the parent unit or fly them to wherever else your heart desires provided its within range. If you disband the fragment, the airframes will be lost but the pilots will be sent to the reserve pool. I usually try my absolute best not to transfer squadrons around with damaged airframes at all BUT there is a little trick that I (and hopefully everyone else knows). If you are transferring to a base connected by rail to the original base, then it does not matter whether the airframes are damaged or not, they will still all move there (although it may take a turn or two).

I am not quite sure what happens to the CO of a fragment unit though if you disband.

The damaged aircraft will be flown to the new base as soon as they are repaired (okay, the day after they are repaired), without you having to control them - unless you move the squadron further away beyond their transfer range.

Its supersized, no doubt, but just give it time and you'll figure it out.

Ummm... I can't remember my first one. It happened in Uncommon Valor so many years ago - and so many sunk carriers ago. [:D]

To get the line wrap to work you have to set compatibility view in the browser. Got to "Tools" then select "Compatibility View" and type in matrixgames.com

related issue:

planes in reserves appears to be TRANSFERRED together with the rest of the group, even if there are not spare pilots in reserve to fly them.

Maybe because the game simulates a double ferry flight by the pilots (even though two flying missions are not generally alllowed in the game...)?

The game simulates additional reserve pilots that are not part of the pilot group.
