The Russians are coming

Post by RogerJNeilson »

Ok I would like to try a scenario where the Soviets get involved, but although the original WITP had one AE does not.

I have loaded up Downfall, have changed the coordinates to use the whole map and have made the Soviets active and saved the scenario to a spare slot.

However apart from the odd Command unit for the Soviets there is nothing else on the map....

Is there a way of getting the Soviet forces into the scenario?

I am new to the editor so stumbling along on this.

You need to go to Location tab and make all Soviet Bases and LCUs active (replace delay 9999 with 0). There is a lot of them =) Scripts for Soviets should be in place too

Actually, it's way easier than that.

Simply go into the editor, and check the box for "Soviets Active". Once you do that, they will be active on day 1.

And yes, Focus Pacific has that enabled along with some other goodies for the Soviets.

While it may seem that it completely unbalances the game in the allies favor (and it does vs the AI), I find in actual testing vs human opponents that it's very challenging to defend the Soviet Union from a determined Japanese opponent. As the Soviet player, your major bases are in the south, connected to your supply generation (the off-map Soviet Union hex) by a long rail line that abuts Japanese territory for most of its length. It is impossible to effectively defend every hex of rail line along your border, and if the Japanese player manages to cut the rail line, your key bases in the south will wither on the vine.

The Soviets start the game with some powerful LCUs, but don't discount the amount of AV that Japan has in Manchuria. With the Soviets active, Japan is free to use their AV there anyway they want. Unfortunately for the Japanese player, other than neutralizing the Soviet forces, there isn't a lot of advantage to taking Soviet bases - they tend to be relatively oil and resource poor, so it's not as attractive of target as the SRA. Focus Pacific addresses this by adding oil and resource sources to the Soviet Union, especially on Sakhalin.

Hmm, I have that checked, and it hasn't done anything for me, perhaps its because I have used the Downfall scenario.

I really don't want to wade through the early years at present which was one reason for looking at a late war scenario, plus the Russians are a bit of an unknown quantity.

Ah well.....

I've been working on an update to Downfall for sometime. Late war scenarios are tough.

You need to start with Scen 1 and move the date forward.

then you need to upgrade units to the date TOE using some form of decision tree and/or source as whether that was done. This applies to LCU, air, and naval.

Then you have to come up the location of the units.

Then leaders.
