Loooong turn resolution times :(

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Loooong turn resolution times :(

Post by CaptCarnage »

Hi there!

Bought the game yesterday finally after staring at it for ages.

But I am quite a bit dissappointed with the turn resolution time.

For example, in Scenario Big Week, I have 4 raids of like 250 each with an equal amount of fighter escorts (hey! It's Big Week after all), and to resolve that it took my 1-year old good laptop well over 25 minutes.

If this is the standard, then it's quite boring. I don't really care about seeing the planes on the map moving extremely slowly etc. And the messages I don't need either (turned them off already).

Is this how it is supposed to be though? I understand that a lot of factors need to be calculated etc. etc. etc. but that holds for a lot of games. WitE and WitW have faster turn resolution times than this of course...

Really? I trust you have the message reader then? If not then you have no idea what you are missing, information wise.

Try putting the game speed on max.

Yes I have the message reader.
If I put on messages a turn lasts even longer.
Of course I put the game to max speed already. But it is so slow. Not the menus or the graphics or map scrolling - that's all fluid and well. Just turns take ages.

Tell me, what is normal turn resolution time then, for 3 raids of 300 bombers each?

I have, but I didn't turn Pop Up messages off. It does help it slightly, but still a turn with 3 raids takes me over 10 minutes to resolve.

However - I deleted the aircraft graphics and this helps a lot!
They look really old and terrible I must say, and I am using the Message Reader anyway to see where the difficult points of the missions are. I don't need the aircraft on the map really. Hey Bomber Command didn't have realtime aircraft info either, did they? They had to work with AARs as well.

The other things that will help is playing in windowed mode, and setting your cpu affinity.

Honestly, I think you're taking a sort of strange approach to the game if you are avoiding looking at the turn resolutions - most of the useful info in game (and for me, most of the excitement) emerges during the resolutions. I do agree that it's less than realistic, but I think the whole point of it is to be able to get some feedback on what had occured and how the enemy is behaving, of which you get only hints after the fact. For me, the average turn resolution time even in BoB is 30+ minutes, sometimes well over an hour - and that's playing on the attacking side. Once I get around to properly playing BTR, I expect that'll go hout to an hour plus. I try to absorb as much detail as you can, and for me being able to visualize "what actually happened" each game day is where my enjoyment of the game comes from. By comparison, logs and debriefs feel like doing paperwork after that. IMO that's a good recipe to get tired of the game quickl,y and get focused on its technical shortcomings instead of being wrapped up in all the imagined drama in the virtual skies, but hey, if it works for you - to each their own way to play!

But anyway, besides explosions, I also suggest: turning off weather, turning off night graphics, use windowed mode, and if that doesn't help - try turning on the "Use DirectDraw Software Emulation" option. For me that last option actually gained better performance (although I actually have every other option enabled rather than disabled).

Naaah 30 minutes or more that would be way too crazy really.

But this AE editor mod provides miracles in this respect. I filter the messages on B-17 or P-51 or Flak etc. to see what happened during the turn, it works way better for me. Plus it shows all the stuff on a map anyway, so it gives a brilliant picture.
How can you do a 700 turn campaign when turns last 30-60 mins? :)

Why, by spending a few years playing through it of course [:D] I thought ludicrously long sessions were part and parcel of Gary Grigsby titles!

But glad you found a method that works for you [:)]
