With the MPP situation as it is, and a navy to repair, I cannot afford to attack in North Africa. I therefore remain on the defensive. The 1st Submarine Flotilla are ordered into the Aegean to see if they can catch the withdrawing RM but they find nothing.

Soviet Union

The Kriegsmarine has done something very strange considering that their ground forces are nowhere near Leningrad; they moved into the Gulf of Finland, only to be surprised by the Soviet cruiser squadron there. The Marat and the cruisers Kirov and Maxim Gorkii make quick work of annihilating Germany's precious destroyers. The Soviet submarines are then ordered to attack the convoy line to Scandinavia.

Elsewhere there is no change to the pictures posted above during the AI turn - except all units have been brought up to maximum strength.

The El-Alamein line has started to crumble!! The Anti-Tank unit was destroyed by a combination of air power, panzers (for which it extracted a price) and infantry. Not only that but some Italian Pigs sneaked into Alexandria harbour and did some rather nasty damage to the Warspite and Barham.

This is most strange. The Germans of Army Group North now make good progress in the Baltics, but their efforts to take Kaunas remains incredibly poor. Wilno has fallen so no doubt this will be rectified soon, but in the meantime this is a great bit of luck for the Soviets.

The Germans appear to be advancing on Minsk in the same manner as Kaunas - a very narrow front, followed by a head on single attack. Good. Long may it continue [;)]...but I suspect it won't [:(]

United Kingdom

The 2nd Battle of El-Alamein which began on the 19th August, moves into its second week. The RAF suffer heavy losses in attacking the Italian 11th Army that holds position south of El-Alamein. A combined attack by the Western Desert Force and IV Corps almost destroys the Italian Army - a job that is then completed by 7th Armoured.

1st Canadian Corps are then brought up to assault the Albanian Corps to the southwest of El-Alamein, while 11th Army, in the town, provide the northern pincer in a concerted attack to try and finish the Italian army in Egypt. II Corps then move up from the south to deliver the Coup-de-grace.

At this point the British run out of fresh troops to bring into the battle....and as no units were reinforced due to using up all the British MMP - this could be a problem......

This well known exchange probably didn't happen but it pretty much sums up Western politicians attempts to understand the eastern European countries - and why they were so damn difficult to understand!

FDR: What’s the King’s name?
Aide: Hungary doesn’t have a King.
FDR: Then who runs the kingdom?
Aide: A Regent by the name of Admiral Miklós Horthy.
FDR: Admiral? Then Hungary must have a powerful navy.
Aide: Hungary has no navy; it doesn’t even have access to the sea.
FDR: Wars are often fought for religious reasons. What’s the main religion there?
Aide: Catholicism, Mr. President. But Admiral Horthy is Protestant.
FDR: Did this admiral declare war on us because of territorial claims then?
Aide: Hungary’s territorial claims are against Romania.
FDR: In that case, did Hungary declare war on Romania?
Aide: No, Hungary and Romania are allies.
FDR: Let me get this straight. Hungary is a kingdom run by a Regent who’s an admiral without a navy, and it is allied with Romania against which it has territorial claims but it has declared war on the U.S. against which it doesn’t.
Aide: That’s right, Mr. President.

The 1st and 2nd Escort Flotillas search for the U-Boats attacking the Canadian convoy route. The 2nd fails to make contact but the 1st finds the Wolf Pack and inflict serious damage upon it.

Meanwhile the 14th and 16th Escort Flotillas both find the Wolf Pack attacking the convoy route to the USSR. Damage is inconclusive for both destroyers and submarines (2 vs 3 losses respectively).
