Christmas AAR

Post by Ranger33 »

Well, what did you get? Best food you ate? Anything funny happen?

I got a nice new flight simulator setup: fighterstick, throttle and pedals from CH, which according to my research is one of the nicer setups you can get without dropping crazy cash. I've always been enamored with flight sims but never really had the gear to fully enjoy them. Had my PC on all night downloading IL2 Sturmovik: 1946, Cliffs of Dover, and the Flaming Cliffs pack for DCS World. (Thanks to steam sale got all this for about $35). Should be more than enough to keep me busy.

Also got a surprise big gift from my parents, an octagonal table that is reversible. On one side it's a regular table and the other side has a felt center and cup holder/little tray for eight players. It will probably be host to more games of Pandemic or COIN games than poker though [:D]

Best food was my own concoction, mashed sweet potatoes with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and crispy/gooey marshmallows on top.

I had these milk chocolate things at my brother's house that had vanilla cheesecake in the middle. Very good. I ate 2. The rest was the regular meal - turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese.

For gifts, nothing special, but I don't ask for much. I received some kind of gadget that when you charge it, has 20 jump starts for a car.

I am not much into gift exchanging. I love the season and I love the reason for the season, just not a big gift giver. Mostly, I don't want to receive gifts. Gifts tend to be something you don't need and they clutter up the house.

My love of Christmas was rekindled by my extended family, a surprise gift of a 27" IPS monitor and Christmas pudding and nutmeg sauce.

It truly was a great Christmas Day.

The Xmas always follow the same pattern;

1. Arrive at my sisters
2. Play a little with my nieces
3. Food. 2 different meals, as my sister and her husband wants different items for xmas (this is ofc what leads to the "oh I could use a couch and an hour now"-feel at the end).
4. Clearing the tables while my nieces start to get more and more annoyed at us grownups for taking so long.
5. Dessert. Rice-cream (if translated word by word from norwegian, with an almond hidden in it).
6. Hand out the prize for the almond. My middle niece this year.
7. Clear the tables again while the girls are tiptoing around the presents.
8. Divide the loot.
9. The kids take turns opening their presents. This usually involves alot of shrieking.
10. The adults open their presents. This usually does not involve alot of shrieking.
11. Cakes.
12. Sit and talk and relax, watch the girls play.
13. Go home. Be delighted at how silent it is at home after too much shrieking at #9.

Best food this year was the pork belly as the "stick meat" (translated word for word from norwegian) was not cured and smoked enough. (It is cured and smoked racks of lamb steamed over birch-sticks).

In terms of loot, pretty much the usual, a couple of bottles of CPt. Morgan, a few books, some socks and boxers.

In other word, another delightful Xmas, and I am also happy it is a year untill the next one, as my stomach can only take such a beating once or twice a year [;)]

My best present! Wife tells me she is going to come home, she been working in the city for the past six months, and only comes home on the weekend, I work Saturdays so we only have Sundays to spend a little time together. She is going to commute to the city each day, I hope this works out. I may be old, but I miss having my wife bullying me on a daily basis.[:D][:D]

For the warspites it was a 'normal' family Christmas at home:

- Presents in the morning (later than previously as the little cruisers grow up, waking mum and dad at stupid o'clock and begging to be allowed to go downstairs to check to see that Santa has arrived is less of an issue)
- I got a book on Wellington, a DVD, Jelly Beans, and some things I'm not telling [;)]
- Roast Chicken, not Turkey as everyone prefers chicken, for Christmas Dinner - a game of charades to go with it
- Family film after dinner (which is code for mum and dad falling asleep - although we did well this year, no doubt because Frozen was the film)
- Evening TV viewing involving Doctor Who and Coronation Street and GBBO and Strictly for Mrs W and the little warspites.
- Supper. The only time of the year we have something called supper - and the only time of the year I treat myself to unsociable, but delicious, pickled onions.

Love Christmas [:)]
