Disappearing German units

Post by btd64 »

Playing scenario 14, the cactus farm. 2 problems.

1. On the right side of the map, towards the top, There are German units which fire and disappear. So I can't fire back at them.

2. The AI is moving AI controlled units back and forth during the Route Phase.

? I had 3 British squads Close Assault a MMG, half squad, and a leader in trenches. The German half squad was destroyed along with all 3 British squads. This wouldn't be normal in RL.

? How does a unit pickup a support weapon?

Save game attached.

Thanks for any assistance....GP

1. Unless the German fire kills all of your units that have a LOS to the firer's hex, you should be able to see them. I will try playing the saved game when I get back home.

2. The AI is trying to find a route path, but the hex where it routes is no better than the one it left, so it moves back; it will then repeat the attempt and the back move, until the routing unit has no more MP (sometimes, this leaves the routing units in worse terrain than the one where it started the Rout Segment.

?#1 It is not normal in ToTH too, but it can (rarely) happen. Depending on which side you are playing, it can be described as a great heroic feat or a great misfortune [:D].

?#2 You may only pick up your SW's (no SW capture).

In the Movement Segment, you can attempt to pick up a SW by moving a unit in the hex where the unpossessed SW lies.
> If the unit still has unused MP's, select the the unit and the SW and click on the "Pick up SW" button (I am not 100% sure about the caption; the button is under the buttons you use to select movement type).
> If the unit has no more, or not enough, unused MP, a message will warn you cannot attempt to pick the SW up.

In the Administrative Segment, the unbroken units that are in the same hex with unpossessed SW will automatically attempt to pick them up, but you have no control about who picks up what.

In both cases, picking up a SW is not automatically successful. If you start your Movement Segment in a hex containing an unpossessed SW you might be able to make more than one attempt to pick it up, as long as you have enough MP's.

I played a couple turns starting from your saved game, but the only German units I saw (and fired at) in the top right area are:

1. A C* leader w/ radio + 2 Fsj squads w/LMG & DC in 17,9
2. 2 Fsj squads in 18,10
3. A 4.2cm PaK + 1 Fsj HS w/MMG in 19,14 (the HS "counter" is not visible on the map, but the squad is there and can be hurt by HE/MG fire)
4. A lone C* leader in 12,17

Is the Fsj stacked with the 4.2cm PaK the unit that disappeared? If this is the case, I think it is a minor bug: when the unit is stacked "beneath" the AT Gun it is not displayed on the map because of the "order of stacking". The hex, however, can be targeted with HE/small arms as long as there is another target (the AT Gun): I do not know what happens if the AT gun is destroyed because I had not (yet) managed to kill it.

Yes, those units in 17,9 and 18,10 and 19,14. Could not see any of those units. I'm going to start fresh and see what happens. Thanks again....GP
