Composition of Generic Soviet and German IDs for early WWII

Post by Antonin »

I know somebody out there has to have this information lying around somewhere...

What units should be used when creating a generic Soviet rifle division, a generic German infantry division and a generic German panzer division circa June 1941?

I'm working on a small, simple scenario depicting one of the border battles in the first couple of weeks after Barbarossa began. I want to create a group of German IDs, a and a couple of panzer divisions to go against a group of Soviet RDs.

How many squads, guns, tanks, trucks, horse teams etc would go into each of these unit types? I have a basic generic rifle division figured out, but what about the others? I'm not looking for strict historical accuracy, I just want to practice scenario creation and have a small, fun scenario to play.

Uhm...I guess you are looking for the TOE for these units. But to be honest, nothing was generic. The Germans used a lot of captured loot to fill out their division. The Soviets didn't even have the equipment to fill out theirs. Some Soviet tank divisions were nothing more than glorified infantry brigades. Some of the infantry divisions were also brigade sized. So if you use the 'standard' TOE you will not even be close to accurate.

I'm aware of all that.

But I am trying to create generic divisions for a small scenario that does not deal with any specific battle. So, I don't expect it to be exactly accurate. It's just a fictional scenario for me to play around with.

Open one of the East Front scenarios and take the information from there?
