Barb/Guad fast start games...

Post by Jagdtiger14 »

Is there a way to change optional rules in the fast start games?

If not, are there plans to make this possible in the future?

My main issue is that those games force you to play 1d10. I can work around of of course, but its a pain.

No such plan, No.

Yes. You should be able to change this by opening the optional rules form and then 'right click' on the option you want to change.

Edit: Note that not all the optional rules may be changed.

That does not work for me. I can click on the option to see the description and right-click does not remove or change any highlighting for the item.

Fortunately, those are small scenarios and don't take long to setup. I suggest just doing the setup with the optional rules desired and save them as his own Fast Start.

For the first time, it also gives an opportunity to play the first few turns over and over again to better understand how the rules and strategy work.

Try to load the save and advance to the select impulse step. Then open the optional rules form and try to 'right click' on a optional rule. It works for me on version 2.2.0 and that is not a 'closed' release.

Thank you Orm! That worked!

I have 2.3.0 running now. I tried your suggestion (I think). Clicked on the Naval impulse choice for Guadalcanal, then Info > Optional Rules, but it is still not enabled for updates.

It appeared to be okay for original poster, so I am not concerned.

I have 2.2.5

Seems to be very stable other than trade, cp routes, and some minor things...but I guess those are a problem in all versions.

I was able to make a lot of optional changes, but not all as Orm mentioned.

Maybe someone else running 2.3.0 can try?

I checked things out again and reviewed the books and see that I misread how the enabling/disabling works.
Now I see that when you do the right-click, it turns (ON) or remove (ON). I was expecting something different.

SO, this is working fine.

In investigating further I see that some items can be added, but can not be removed. Others can not be added at all. There is probably some logic behind that, but it is not very predictable.

I guess the good part is that at least you add or remove a few different optional rules whenever you want.

That I don't like. It requires an honor system in a multi-player game.

I was kind of surprised that you could do this as well, so was not initially surprised when it could not be updated, but after I understood it correctly, I could see that these could be changed easier than might be a good idea.

Since the backup file would be shared, it should be clear to everyone who saved that copy (notifications were made through Netplay regarding the backup), I don't think that it can be done without anyone noticing.

Additionally, I expect that early in a game there may be some revisiting of optional rules to use, so those might need to get updated.

I think the visibility will manage itself, but it may not be obvious when changes are made.

Once Netplay evolves beyond 2, I will be expanding to 4 or 6 players and fully expect that the initial decisions on optional rules to use will need to change. I was expecting to determine that with a short scenario before playing the full game.

The original motivation for enabling changing the Optional Rules using the Optional Rules Help form was for when Proposing a NetPlay game. That processing occurs when posting a request for opponent using the NetPlay screen.

===

There are a lot of conditional when doing it in the middle of a game. For instance, you can't change the Land CRT during land combat resolution (duh!). But there are dozens of other conditionals for the dozens of optional rules that can be changed during a game.

I could add one more conditional and prohibit changing them if a NetPlay game were in progress - I'll think about that some more.

===

The following permits changing all the Land optional rules except the 8th one: Unlimited Breakdown.

case LandRulesList.ItemIndex + 1 of
// ****************************************************************************
// ON/OFF 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7; but not Land Movement -> Land Combat Resolution.
// ****************************************************************************
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7:
begin
if (Game = nil) or
(not (Game.Phase in [pLandMovement .. pLandCombatResolution])) then
PBoolean(AddToPtr(@OptRules, ORIndex - 1))^ := not CurrValue;
end;
end;

Perfection is an elusive goal.
