I want to use the Glen factory on something important like . . . FIGHTERS!!

I use Nells on NavS since there isn't enough patrol groups of Mavis/Emily.

Those Bettys aren't very fast, so what are you going with for late war fighters and bombers? Sam? George? Frank? Shinden? Does this mod give you extra factories? If not, decisions need to be made in the next few months on what to prioritize.

Yup - I'll get better fighters at the end of the war that look good but my pilots will probably be crappy. Most of those fighters are short-ranged but I'll get a few that should do for escort duties. As to extra factories - I dunno. I tend to cut back my production to specific lines or specialized air-frames so I think I'll have plenty of factory life.

I did that on Dec. 8th loading them aboard an amphib TF created from the HK shipping and took them to Kwangchowan.

A yup - Bruce pulled them out and I'm pretty sure the rest of the units are at Kwangchowen. You can see a TF in post #3 just under the Kwangcowen label that, when I did a mouse-over, showed a couple of xAP in it. I figured he had it LRCAPped and/or extended the CAP over Kwangchowen to cover the TF, and since he has something like 200 fighters between Kwangchowen and what was at Hong Kong, I chose not to try naval air attacks.

I think there was a unit or two in Victoria, Malaya, that Bruce was also able to evac out. I've got three divisions headed for Kwangchowen so in the end it'll do him little good. Also, with the damage I'm doing to the airfield, I don't expect the fort level to be above 3.

Most of my air losses were at Kwangchowan. Bruce is using a layered CAP and most of his fighters in the higher altitude range are slipping past my fighters to hit the bombers. I've cranked my altitude up to adjust for this.

I caught some of Bruce's French destroyers near Hong Kong with a SCTF consisting of CL and DD and I put down two DD and set the third on fire with 5 hits.

Subs
There was a lot of sub activity this turn but most of the activity is from the allied side. Bruce has a lot of Russian subs plus whatever was at Manilla so I'm ramping up ASW patrols both naval and air plus a lot of AG flying naval search missions. This will be really spotty for a while since my pilots almost all are really lite in ASW and Naval Search skills - lol. In the end I lost a tanker escorted by a PB. The message I take from this is that I need to increase my escorts.

Russia
Near Hailar my Oscar-Id are taking losses but they are also proving my point that fighters with CL mounted guns have a distinct edge and most of the Russian fighters have CL-mounted guns. I started with a pair of AG with the Oscar-Id but I can't start building them until next month (January 42).

Air
My air losses so far are about 2:1, which is expected when his bases have 100-200 fighters. So even if you throw a Sweep with a large AG of, say 50 fighters, they are still outnumber 2:1 or better on most occasions because coordinated sweeps are rare.

How are the pilots replacement rates adjusted and holding up in this bloody mod?

This is what I'm seeing in Tracker. Much of the heavy combat for my fighters has been defensive so I have a better opportunity to keep my fighter pilots alive. When I attack enemy bases my fighters are on escort and this is where I pick up a heavier pilot loss ratio.

The P-50 for the allies kicks butt. I think that the biggest challenge is that so many of the allied fighters have the center-mounted guns and a high accuracy rate. 30 Cal. guns have an accuracy of 70 and the 20mm guns have an accuracy of 52 on the P-50... And with a Max altitude of 38,750 VS the 32,810 of the Zero the P-50 also has the altitude advantage. With no armor on a Zero, the A6M2 is at a distinct disadvantage. The P-50 upgrades in April, gaining speed and trading the 30 Cal for 50 Cal. guns with an accuracy of 58.

Compare the P-50 guns to the Zero that sports a pair of center-mounted 7.7mm guns and an accuracy of 54 and another pair of Front-mounted 20mm that have an accuracy of 28...

So my WAG is that once the fatigue level hits 0 my WIA pilots will be pressed back into active duty. Since most of my battles have been over my own territory/bases, I have many more WIA then MIA and KIA. Tracker shows 111 WIA, 15 MIA, and 15 KIA.

At the beginning of the game I think this is important as for Bruce, his pilots should be mostly lost over my bases\territory so the pilot losses for the allies should lean heavier towards KIA and MIA (or at least that's my WAG).

So what else is going on? My units are almost ready for a push on Petropavlovsk. I'm gunna take that base and then move over to Okha and Nikolaevsk. This limits the bases Bruce can fly aircraft out of and should provide me with air superiority from my carriers. All while I'm driving across from Hailar to cut the rail lines at Shilka.

West and northwest, in Malaya and Burma, I'm pushing forward heavily.

Production is ramping up for fighters as those are getting eaten up whenever I engage him near his bases that have large aircraft support capability.

And in China I'm driving to take Kwangchowan and push up from Canton to penetrate the rail lines near Kweilin & Liuchow.

So in this mod Russia has lots of oil and it's literally in my backyard. The allies are strongly forward-deployed in the Philippines and DEI. A new model of fighter, the P-50, rules over the Zero. And center-line machinegun/cannon mounts on many of the older model fighters have an increased lethality due to the better fighters that both sides seem to boast. <grin> - it gets better. A lot of the normal attack points that Japan would normally target at the beginning of a war are covered with enhanced CD units. Both Japan and the allies have greatly enhanced orders of battle. Additional industrial complexes and resources are scattered in places you would not expect so you really need to study the map from the allied perspective on day-1 before picking your targets.

• So if I can, I'll try to break Bruce's perimeter and tap into the merchie shipping that is still running down the DEI from the PI.
• Many of the allied airfields in the PI, China, DEI, and China are level 4 airfields and they hold a lot of fighters. In the PI he probably has about 200 fighters. In Kwangchowan I see maybe 120-150 fighters. Up near Hailar in Manchukuo, It looks like Bruce has 3-4 bases flying fighters and lite bombers. I'll try to take out the airfields with bombing strikes coupled with a heavy fighter escort. I'll try to get in a few sweeps too but I need to use fighter groups that have a lot of AC - say 48 plus.
• Japan starts with 2239 fighters/fighter bombers on the board (Japan starts out with 0 FB). Japan will receive a slew of fighter groups over the next 90 days but most will be token units with 1-3 AC and it will be up to Japan to fill them out by increasing their factories to produce fighters in the hundreds per month.
• The allies start out with 4434 fighters/fighter bombers. Over the next 90 days the allies will add something like 95 fighter groups and five FB groups with what looks like what - about 1800 more F/FB… So Japan really has to hit specific locations and gang up on the air combat.

So my overall plan is to…

• Capture Russia. All of it.
• Hold China in place and cut their supplies by taking Burma. Once Russia has fallen I can divert the Manchukuo forces west (warm smile). In truth, capturing Russia gives me secure access to oil and refineries that will save my butt in the later stages of the war when Japan loses the DEI.
• Provide a holding force to keep the attention of Bruce in the PI while I march methodically down Malaya and then take Sumatra and drive down the DEI in a somewhat historical fashion. This will be modified somewhat by trying to limit amphibious landings from some of the bases that Bruce has beefed up with enhanced CD units.
• In the pacific I plan to try and capture all of the island bases west of Hawaii and then set up a heavy perimeter of long-range recon air groups plus subs that provide eyes and intel for when he needs to drive across to the home isles of Japan. I'm hoping that I'll have enough air power (coupled with subs) to curtail or at least harry convoys to Australia using anything other than routing along the western edge of the map.

If I can set up a series of good defensive bases in the Pacific I can roll back as the pressure mounts. This gives the closer defensive perimeters of Japan more time to build, reinforce, and provide supplies for long sieges. When the end comes, it should come like a freight train. Bruce will rule with better aircraft, better ground forces, and a carrier advantage of something like 7:1. So I need to create fire-breaks that can slow him down and wear out his forces.

Thoughts, suggestions, and discussion are welcome. I've been chewing over this for about a month and this seems to me like my best course of action.

Looks like you are right. I just went through the list of Kiso class xAKL and converted the first 20 to PB. It looks like I'll be getting about half in three days and the other half in eight days.

Hey - I'm looking for tips from ya'll on Japanese ASW tactics.

I seem to get opponents that like to slam an area of the map with 5-10 subs and go after my merchies.

So I try to counter by:

Naval Search both night and Day. 6k altitude.

I'll use 1-2 Medium Bomber Air Groups flying Naval Attack @ 6k. I'll also use a longer-ranged MB AG (like a Betty or Nell) for ASW since ASW range is halfed.

Several ASW TFs of 2-3 ships patrolling. DDs PBs... I try to keep my TFs with the same type of ship. I try to go with Naval and Aggressive skill sets when I'm selecting leaders for ASW TFs.

My Merchie TFs tend to be 5-10 merchies and 2-3 PB. This doesn't seem to protect well... And I have to convert a lot of shipping to PBs to achieve this.

Anyways - if you have tips or observations on how to beat the snot outta allied subs I'd really appreciate if you'd share a post [:)]
