Loading Games Sometimes Cause MWiF to Crash

Paul - I split this off from the other thread so as to minimize confusion.

I wonder if it might have to do with the recent multiple monitor program changes interacting with SLY files.

If you can open those other two files from last night and change the SLY to the generic New game one, re-save and re-post them, I'll see if I can open them.

So for the two files in question from references 2 & 3 above, I successfully opened the files, changed the SYL to the default "New Game" and resaved them.

It's bizarre. Same problem, I see the progress bars for awhile and then MWiF just disappears from the screen and from the Task Manager.

I'll try rebooting and reinstalling 2.3.1.1 (the playtester version of 2.3.1) later on this evening.

I am not sure what problem you are reporting here.

When you say you changed the SLY file to New Game and resaved the game, did you use an editor (e.g., NotePad) or MWIF?

I understand the problems reported in the 3 posts you referenced, but I don't understand what is happening here (in this thread).

I requested that to see if SLY files made a difference to my inability to open the original bug file. It's the same game file, stored without external editing, just with the generic New Game SLY chosen before saving.

Steve, we're not sure what's going on here. As I understand it Paul, Pat (ashkpa) and myself are all three running with the public beta 2.3.1. Pat and I routinely exchange game files without issue even though we both use different and customized SLY layouts. Paul, for some unknown reason, is unable to open game files either from Pat or me. As I understand it, what happens is that the file starts to open then MWiF goes away and has to be killed through task manager. This thread was started to try to figure out why Paul can't open files from Pat or me.

This makes me wonder if something's going on with Paul's install. When Pat and I first upgraded to 2.3.1 I had a similar thing happen to me. I couldn't open files from Pat without crashing MWiF, and then having to kill it through task manager. My issue I believe was that between the issues identified with 2.3.0 and the hotfix I went back to 2.2.8. Then when the hotfix came out I then again upgraded to 2.3.0 and applied the hotfix 2.3.1. However, as best as I can figure, I mistakenly applied 2.2.8 instead of 2.3.0 and then added the hotfix to that. I'm not sure that was it but I did go back and reinstall, or correctly install, 2.3.0 and again applied the hoxfix 2.3.1. After that everything between Pat and myself worked fine. So, again, I wonder if somethings wrong with Paul's install?

I wonder if there are problems with having a different monitor configuration.

I checked into one problem where the poster had 3 monitors and I had 1 monitor. It went through a couple of exceptions, but I was able to open up the file by clicking OK on those files.

It might be worth changing to a single monitor before saving the file to avoid that particular concern, at least until it is addressed.

That's what I did in post 1 above. I switched to the New Game.SLY configuration which defaults to a single monitor.

That can't be the issue here, since I can restore all games which rkr1958 and askhpa have put in here. The game automatically recognizes that I haven't got the screen layout they are using, and opens it correctly, after which I immediately restore my own screen layout version. I also use 1 monitor.

The program checks for whether the SLY file named in the saved game file (i.e., in the GAM file) can be found. If it can't, then it defaults to the New Game.SLY file. If that SLY file can't be found, it creates a new one - based on the number of monitors currently available.
