Riga Historical

Post by AngrySwan »

In the AA scenario the tank army of AG North attacks in the direction Schaulen - Riga while in history it went to Daugavpils (Dunaburg), that is, went off map for this scenario.

What about making the scenario historical and keeping the tank and motorized divisions undeployed for the first scenario? (they cannot attack Daugavpils because it is not on the map) I was thinking about sending the tank army to Kaunas but that would make the German attack too easy.

AGN would still need to take Liepaja (Libau) and Kaunas. The Soviet division that garrisons Schaulen could be sent to Kaunas area and Germans could have more objectives there. Fall of Riga would become a scripted event.

The player's task becomes somewhat easier because you do not have to figure out how to take Riga but you still have Kaunas, Liepaja or Libau and watch out for the Red Blitzkrieg. At least on my machine it happens.

The 1941 campaign still has the tank army going to Riga; this is an idea for the future.

Hi Marechal,

you are refering to Mansteins LVI Corps famous advance. The main reason this is not included was that it basically means a map almost twice the size with half of it enemy lacking terrain to move your Pz.Div. to Dünaburg. The main battle was towards Kaunas and Riga.

Not deploying the tank units does not seem more accurate in a historical sense. Of course we could expand the map for strict historical reasons, but i think it would reduce the fun part as there would be several turns of moving units without much action to the east.

Hi Marechal,
The Battle of Raseiniai (23–27 June 1941) was a large tank battle. The battle was fought between the elements of the German 4th Panzer Group (General Erich Hoepner) and the Soviet 3rd Mechanized Corps (Major General Alexey Kurkin) with Major General Nikolai Shestapolov's 12th Mechanised Corps.
To simulate this famous tank battle, you could make of this city a victory mark type.

Hi Ronald,

In the historical sense I am worried about having to send the tank corps to Schaulen and Riga instead of Kaunas. The good news is, Schaulen and Riga can be taken by infantry alone; with some artillery and air support while tanks attack the Soviet forces near the border and then move to Kaunas.

This plan is more aggressive and leaves no chance for Red Blitzkrieg in East Prussia.

Since infantry is slower than tanks I had to go for a normal victory but that will give me more resource points.

Hi terminator,

The Soviets have three tank divisions in this scenario. One will attack Klaipeda/Memel very early in the game - which gave me the idea of Red Blitzkrieg theory - and I have no idea where I could meet the other two. They can move to the area Kaunas, Raseiniai or continue with the Red Blitzkrieg plan and try to attack targets in East Prussia.

I will see if Raseiniai attracts the Soviet tanks if marked as victory location or maybe they react to attack on Kaunas.

Revisiting the idea:

- Historically the tank and mechanized units went between Schaulen and Kaunas, so the player will not sin against historical accuracy too much if taking one of the cities with mechanized forces. Kaunas is easy, it is close and there is infantry that can take it. Schaulen can be taken either by infantry or mechanized units. Riga (or, in fact, Pardaugava - the western half of the city) is harder to reach if you do not send tanks but there are ways to reach it.
- There is a ''cheat base'' in East Prussia and by the time you reach Riga scenario you will have some resources to spend so you can disband some units on the map and buy new ones.
- Tank battle of Raseiniai. There is a Soviet tank division in Kaunas so if you move your tank army in that direction and if the Soviets move their division west using the Kaunas - Tilsit road you will meet them somewhere near Raseiniai.
