What level do you play at?

Post by ruffels »

Hi All
This is my first posting to the forum. I'm fairly new to the system (although I played the old Pacific War once all the way through). I just finished my first game which was the May to Dec 42 scenario (playing the Allies). I actually thought I was playing to Dec 43 but I guess I picked the wrong one. I'm about to start again and do the long one.
I've noticed alot of talk about not being able to capture Lunga or Shortland or Lae until at least 43 and that got me thinking. I was playing the scenario at the Historical level and by Jan 31, 42 I had Lunga, Shortland, Lae and Gasmata and was starting to mount an attack against Rabaul.
Do most people play the Hard level or Very Hard level? Is the Historical generally too easy? What makes it harder? Does the AI play better strategically or is it just that the computer gets better odds in attacks etc.?
I'm trying to decide which level to play at next and I'm also wondering what I can expect.

Thanks all. By the way I really enjoy the game and I enjoy reading everyone's posts on this forum. Can't wait for Pacfic War!

It is hard to go back to playing the computer after playing PBEM.

If you want to have a great game against the AI, then play scenario #19, on very hard, give yourself (the Allies) only 70% unit commitment, and give the Japanese 200% unit commitment.

While it's not like playing against a human, this can give you a challenge (especially if you're just starting out).

Cheers!

my observation...

...is that on "hard" and "very hard" the AI gets a bonus in all kinds of combats.
If you play IJN against AI USN you'll find that even your elite Zero squads get shot out of the skies by all early allied fighters. It's amazing...
I could not observe the AI to use any new approaches or strategies on these levels.
