No option to advance - First Game

Post by adarbrauner »

I hope the screenshot shall be clear.

It is my first game.

I could not have studied all of the manual yet, and in any case it does not clarify everything.

In the situation shown in the screenshot, I'm clearly playing Germany. In previous impulse, I've ordered a ground strike assault by stuka unit.
Then the Russian player (again me, this is solo) was given the option to deploy air defence. And so he did, he moved into the atacked hex a Yak 1 unit. The game asked for resolution of the combat, confirmed, and as a result the attacker was defined as "cleared" (of which I don't know yet the meaning, but byintuition is that the attack has been repelled).

Now the turn has gone back to the German, as shown here in the screenshot, under the name "ground strike: air to air combat".

In detail, the sub phase appears to be "choose defending unit".

the point is, that i'm not given any option to choose any unit, not the attacked stuka, nor any other close fighter unit for example to come and defend.
More than this, I am not "cleared" to move on the phase, as you may see from the screen shot.

Out of desperation, I clicked on "undo all", subsequently i was given the option to move the interested stuka unit. Just, that after having "moved it back" to its starting position, not only that it appears having disappeared totally fromthe map, but also I'm still stuck not being able to choose anything nor even to end this sub - phase.

I think I'm runnig from the beginning this turn again while saving the current as it is, waiting for any eventual explanatioin from you.

Thank you,

Adar

Edit: for clarification, the hex object of the ground and air attack is the one near the czech -Hungarian border, shown occupied here by a Mig 3, the Russian defending (not Yak 1, as I wrote previously).

It seems to me that you are still in the air-to-air combat.

"Cleared" means that one opposing bomber was cleared through to the target. Please, check air-to-air combat results on 14.3.3 Rules as coded.

Now, it is needed to select what bomber is cleared. Looking at the screenshot, it seems that you have (intentionally or not) minimised the air-to-air combat window. Open it again and select the bomber to clear, so that you can continue with your game (more a2a combat, probably).

I hope this helps

Hello Junto;

next time it shall happen, I'll try....meanwhile, the game was closed but not saved, unwillingly. BTW, what is the meaning of "Air unit cleared" as result of air combat, please?

Cleared from the air combat, meaning that the bomber reached the target to drop the bombs.

Your eyes are better than mine! The Air-to-air Combat form appears to be "rolled up" (not minimized). In the screenshot it is visible as a horizontal bar just under the Main form. It can be "rolled down" easily by clicking on the top upper left corner. To do that, the Sequence of Play form should first be closed.

My first question is: What version of the program are you running?

'Cleared through' is shorthand for "cleared through the defending enemy fighters to attack the target".

Make a list and post it. People will answer. [You might try to Search the Players Manuals first.[;)]]

Use the tutorial video's to get a grasp on this beast. And the interactive tutorials also give you clues on how to play the game...

Also check out this thread: tm.asp?m=3555406

It is hundreds of posts long but the most recent several pages had quite a number of questions from players just new to the game. This thread is from the "WiF School" sub-forum and there may be many other threads there that will assist you.

Also note that the normal display of posts on this forum is the last 365 days but you can set it to give you results from much further back. See the top right above the stickeys on the main thread list for that.

While the air combat is happening, the computer swtches sides several times, asking one side whether they want to fight one more round or retreat or to apply losses, etc..

Maybe you are in one of these subphases and you have a screen where you need to select a defending plane for example because the stuka was cleared (went through to bomb freely) buy in the fight it managed to abort or kill the URRS unit, so you should have a screen somewhere waiting for you to select the unit and apply the result. If so, until you do it will not go on.

As for "where is that screen then?", I had a lot of problems of this kind when testing the game with only one screen, but they dissapeared when I used two, don't know which was the problem but it seemed my computer placed sometimes screens out of the area of visibility (and selection) of my screen when I was using only one.

This is from my early times with the game so maybe newer versions have solved the problem, so check the version as Shannon says.

I think this is the issue, yes, placing of the screens.....anyhow, the game has been updated to the 2.3.40 version.
