NetPlay Challenge

Post by Shannon V. OKeets »

As I mentioned in my last two monthly reports for 2016, I want to get more people playing NetPlay games. To do that, the beta testers and myself are looking for opponents for two player NetPlay games: Axis versus Allied.

We will be using a Public Beta of MWIF, version 02.03.04.00, which should be available either late this week or early next week (i.e., in late January). To run that version, be sure to have upgraded to version 02.03.00.00 previously - which has some minor changes to a couple of data files. The data file changes are essential for using any version numbered 02.03.00.00 or higher.

Ideally, we will have games that use a variety of optional rules. However, I’m not laying down any absolutes about what optional rules are selected by the players. We’ll just see what players agree to between themselves. For scenarios, I would like to get Barbarossa, Guadalcanal, Missed the Bus, and Global War all included. But again, that depends on what the players choose to play.

For myself, I am available to play 2 games. I’ll play either side. Optional rules are negotiable. Any of Barbarossa, Missed the Bus, and Global War would be fine by me. Because I am in Hawaii, playing against someone in Europe is probably not feasible due to the time difference. But anywhere in the Americas would work. I can play in the mornings and afternoons, which with the 5 hour time difference, translates as the afternoons and evenings on the east coast.

Post in this thread if you are interested. The beta testers have volunteered to participate too. Best would be to have myself or a beta tester playing one side in every game. That way any bugs that occur can be quickly identified and hopefully fixed by me just as fast. The idea is to not have NetPlay bugs interfere with any of these games, with me issuing Hot Patches as often as necessary to keep the games going.

I will be posting After Action Reports (In Progress Reports really) for the games I am playing. So take that into consideration if you are shy or self conscious - or you could be identified as Player X should you prefer. Another consideration is that I am pretty good at MWIF and have never been known for kindness or generosity when playing board/computer games.

Come one, come all!

I'm interested in a Global War game using MWIF's Standard Rules. I should probably play against a less experienced player since I am currently only on my second solitaire game. I live in US - Chicago (Central Time), so could play at various times. I can be found on Steam at Pax25 or send me a private message here.

I am one of the beta testers and would like to try either Barb or Guadalcanal. Doesn't matter which side I play.
CST in US and can use Skype. I'm retired so during the day is fine.

We (i.e., you and I) should be able to work around your schedule.

What scenario?

What optional rules?

How often (times per week)?

How long for each 'session'?

What times would work best for you?

I use Skype, which works well I have found. But MWIF also supports sending text messages between players.

I am in contact with Don because we are both away from home in the first part of February and we have agreed to start around the 12th.

Will let you know options and scenario, but think it might be safest to try a few turns of Barb first and then move on to a longer scenario.

Available vs beta tester. Global War (either side), 2d10, negotiate options. Would like to try the MWiF supported text messaging. I'm eastern time zone USA.

I've got the latest Beta and am available tonight (Saturday) if anyone wants to play. Best way to find me is to add me on Steam (Pax25). I'll be on there playing my solitaire game. During game we can communicate via Skype if need be.

Hi, been a little while, was on a world tour ;-)

I used to help out with some of the beta testing in the past. I'm up for helping out with the net play.

I'm available a few weeknights after 7pm PST. or on weekends. I'm typically up around 6am PST... let me know.

Current Status (as far as I can tell):

Shannon, MWIF developer in Hawaii: no pairing in this thread but a possible opponent from the NetPlay Forum Seeking Opponent Database (versus CmdrCraig). Still looking for a second opponent.

Pax25, in Chicago: no pairing in this thread. Maybe versus Celebrindal on the west coast of the US?

Timian, in Maryland versus Paul, in Canada.

Pete Garnett, in UK versus Centuur, in The Netherlands.

Bommerrang, beta tester in Europe: no pairing in this thread.

Jadtiger14, in Florida: no pairing in this thread. Looking for beta tester opponent.

Not sure how Hawaii vs Florida would work out time-wise? But I'm up for it if you cant find a second opponent.

I'll stick my name in the hat for testing.

I play with most optionals, easier to mention the few I don't enjoy much-

No rialway movement bonus
No limited hq movement
No blitz bonus (using 2d10)
no unlimited breakdown
no defensive shore bombardment (allowing both sides to shore bombard is very strange)
no extended game length

I typically trade chinese attack weakness for food in flames.

I am typically available on Saturday and/or Sunday for several hours at a time.

My overall skill level is expert level with Wif, (27 years on and off) and still learning the Mwif interface. I've never played in a tournament, but I have pleyed tournament level players. I don't typically go easy on new players, because how would they learn? On the other hand, I won't quit suddenly if I realize I'm losing either. I am very intersted in 'how' things end, and how they play out.

I am flexible and will play either side, and don't subject decisions to statistical analysis or to long contemplation as I have learned rigid plans and Wif don't go together easily. I generally have a plan before my impulse starts.

It is not crucial that one person be a beta tester. Just be sure to keep me informed if you run into any problems - and make frequent saves which I could use to debug should trouble arise. If I know you are using the beta, I'll make sure you know about any Hot Patches I create to fix newly discovered NetPlay bugs.

Global War, Advanced Optional Rules with these changes:

No extended game length

A possible second opponent from the NetPlay Forum Seeking Opponent Database (versus CmdrCraig).
