Thing that got old about TNG was that there was NO crew conflict. Any crew conflict explored in an episode was solved at the end by some sort of virus/alien/blahblahblah and the crew was back to being one happy family. Anyone in a family with 2 kids knows that ain't the case

I wondered, myself, before DS9 started, how they would "explore" the cosmos in a stationary space station. I thought the wormhole was a supremely fantastic idea. It set DS9 apart - in that - instead of "seeking out" civilizations, they were able to "bring the civilizations to DS9". Little different twist, same result.

Oh, and ftw - best episode in all the series (better than Best of Both Worlds that I said above) was TOS's "Balance of Terror". It was a classic "destroyer vs. a sub" battle, only with spaceships

The only real conflict occurred with Ro Lauran (Michelle Forbes). She was the rebel Bajoran that ended up betraying Capt Picard. About the only real conflict that occurred.

The Doomsday Machine is my favorite TOS Episode.

You have to watch TOS with the remastered Special Effects. Holy COW! They are great. Watching the Enterprise get down low and STRAFE the Doomsday Machine is great. Same said in Balance of Terror and the final fight in Ultimate Computer. The new effects totally improve the classic episodes.

Question for other StarTrek dorkwads like myself out there: Do you think that your preferred series had to do with when you were 'coming of age' on the topic? Would the proverbial millennials think ST:TNG was the best by virtue of their age and exposure to something new, or would they think "Enterprise" was better because of temporal bias?

As a literal actual millennial (just); TOS was I think the only one that you could ever call innovative or interesting as more than just a TV show; it's incredibly striking that were you to, as an example, watch a 1960s sitcom and a 1960s ST episode (well, some of them), one after the other, muted, you would completely, immediately, fundamentally understand that here has been an enormous technological change - I mean, noone spends half an hour treknobabbling about the quartz tachyon thing, they just make a call on their mobile phone and it passes without comment, which of course is uninteresting today but wasn't so in 1960whatever. It was such a big thing that millions of nerds basically lost their minds over it and dedicated their lives to making the stuff they saw on TV into reality.

The TNG onwards stuff is...not like that; TNG goes some places because of virtuoso acting, and a few more because Roddenberry (who was interesting, being simultaneously scientifically imaginative and uninformed, and also an utter creep) stopped being involved so much after S3 (it is interesting how many people note that change probably without knowing why!) so writers could do some stuff that didn't fit the mold; DS9 goes some places because it turns into an actual big-scope drama with a plot, but it could just as easily be set in a castle or on an island or another entirely different space station in another conceptual universe or whatever and not much would change but the wrapping.

The...problem is that when you sit down and think about them too hard the implications of the lack of imagination actually involved in using the earlier stuff as a wrapping can get...well, frankly, extremely creepy and unpleasant. You do have to think about them too hard! But, well, once "humanity spends 400 years in space and doesn't develop a single new metaphor" and "this is magic or, at best, homeopathy wearing science as a skin", which are essentially what the supposedly-technologically-innovative stuff boils down to, registered with me I could never look at them again without feeling weirded out.

BBC America is play mainly ST, TNG, and recently started playing Voyager. I am home today sick, but not enough to prevent me doing three turns with early Voyager on in background. [;)]

My eldest chimes in that DS9 is the best. He has seen EVERY Trek episode EVER! He says "the Dominion War and side story lines that actually matter."

Favorite Episode of ANY Trek: TOS--Doomsday Machine or Ultimate Computer, TNG--Best of Both Worlds, DS9--Way of the Warrior (bring in WORF!), the final episode of Voyager, and E2 of Enterprise.

He wanted one or more from each series.

WEll there is still some excellent Science Fiction on TV. Season 2 of The Expanse starts Wednesday night on SyFy. You can catch up on season 1 on Amazon Prime but it is not required watching to watch the new series. Although season 1 kicks ass. What's The Expanse? Space Opera at it's finest. Palace intrigue, real politics, saber rattling, espionage, hi tech, space battles, rail guns Battle Cruisers, Marines and deadly plagues. The books are outstanding. Kind of like Game of Thones in space. Highest recommendation, family safe.

I'm looking forward to the Expanse's season 2. The first season I had to watch twice to get everything, had to look up my "space charts" to figure out where everything is/was. It was entertaining, and safe for kids for the most part (11 and up i would say). Gravity torture. Now there's a new one.

Quick poll of my Trekkie mother (went to trek conventions dressed up as a Vulcan):

Favorite series: The original series. The characters were the best. The interplay between Spock, Kirk, and McCoy made the series great. The plots were not always the best but the characters were wonderful.

DS9 sucked because it was set in a space station. You can't explore worlds and go where no one has gone before when you are stuck on a space station

I myself prefer TOS. Never really cared much for later series. Well, except for T'pol from Enterprise. She certainly drew my interest.

My wife went to school with and remained long-terms friends with Daniel Abraham, one half of the "James S.A. Corey" that wrote the books in "The Expanse". We get some interesting teasers from time to time. Very happy to see the popularity and reception for this series. [8D]

We have enjoyed the books and the series very much thus far. The series in particular seems to have really taken off, leading to (ala "Game of Thrones") a resurgence in the books.

No spoilers here, but I'd say that those that have liked Season 1 of The Expanse should watch Season 2 before they start on the books, as the respective timelines overlap. You may read something in the books that hasn't yet occurred in the series or vice-versa.

Btw, best SF movies imho from old "Blade Runner" and newer "Event Horizon" (even if it turns horror towards the end [;)])
