I may be changing my mind.

13 Dec 1941

More landings. This time at Tulagi and Luganville. He's throwing the net out pretty wide pretty early.

This encouraged me:

He didn't bring enough troops for the job. I've had patrols covering the area and it looks like his ships have already departed. My carriers are about 2-3 days away, and two cruisers are even closer. Ships are still at Kavieng. I may be able to sail in and still bump him out.

He may have cut Rabaul short reaching out to the Southeast.

We'll see...

It doesn't quit.

Troops are now landing at Darwin, which I didn't need. Maybe he landed weak here too, so I'll stand and fight it out. There's four battalions and a company there, with fairly decent AV, so we'll see. Regarding Australia, Intel Chimp told me this.
1941-12-13 24th Infantry Regiment - - is planning for an attack on Brisbane -

In my game with KenchiSulla, I got crap like this all the time, so I don't know how serious this is. In the short term, I think I'm okay, as it appears he's shorting some areas of troops, casting his net as wide as he is.

At Rabaul, my two cruisers arrived as he was unloading troops. Too bad I didn't get any transports.

In about a day and a half, my first carrier will arrive, with the second a day later. This should buy me time to beef things up. First sign of KB though, and they're gone. I'm ruthlessly sticking to hitting them where they ain't. Hopefully my search planes won't let me down. A bunch of planes and base forces are enroute from the US.

Langley encountered a transport group near Sorong. This probably indicates he's about to take all the bases along the top of New Guinea.

15 December 1941

A busy day.

The Monkey gave me a few relevant warnings:
1941-12-14 6/24th Infantry Regiment - - is planning for an attack on Brisbane -
1941-12-14 13/144th Infantry Regiment is loaded on a Yusen A Cargo class xAK moving to Rabaul -
1941-12-14 17th Medium Field Artillery Regiment is loaded on xAK Sydney Maru #2 moving to Rabaul -

We'll see if those two get to Rabaul.

For the daily amphib landings, they're now at Babar, Emirau Island, Kirakira and Sorong. He's being thorough with grabbing all the little islands.

The RAF finally get their licks in near Mersing. Dave is being very cheap with fighter cover there, relying on floatplanes for the job.

From the email I got back from him, I don't think he was expecting this. Both groups will pull out about 2 hexes south of Shortlands. I want him to think this was a hit and run, so KB doesn't come snooping. Hopefully it buys me time to get more troops ashore there.

Troopwise at Rabaul, we're about even, with bombardments not hurting anyone.

Hong Kong falls.

I hurt him a bit at Darwin. I'm glad I didn't just run there.

Good job! He has plenty of fighters to cover the ships near Mersing...

You might want to put some Catalina on torpedo attack out of Luzon with torpedoes.

Thanks, T Rav.

Air war over Luzon is pretty much finished. My planes there can't seem to fight, so I'm getting them out. One PBY unit made it to Townsville, where I need the surveillance more.

16 December 1941

Landing at Koumac now. He's moving too fast. After today, I can probably free up a brigade a day for Noumea. I'll need to get Suva/Pago Pago up and running better too. A big TF with planes and troops left San Fran a few daya ago.

My second CV group hit ships near Tulagi.

More Activity.

Landings at Kuching, Singkawang and Normanton. I suspect that some of these, like Normanton are being taken on the cheap, but I still have to divert forces to deal with them.

A force showing a carrier popped up near Rabaul. My transports are aborting unloading to get away. I don't think it's KB, as it appears to be showing 18 fighters and 34 bombers. My carriers are swinging north to challenge. I'll pit the pair of them against something small.

My forces at Rabaul now have three times his AV, so I'm attacking this turn.

20 December 1941

More busy-ness.

More landings. Now at New Hanover Island, Manus and Dobo. He dumped more troops into Rabaul, just as I was attacking, with bad results for me. More troops are piling into Darwin, too.

My carriers will reach Rabaul tomorrow. Judging from his air activity, I'm guessing he has about two Ryujo sized carriers around there. They seem pretty light on fighters, too, so I may have a chance to get some licks in early. I'm doubting my ability to seriously hold that base at this point, as I'm sure KB will come to visit to wrap things up.

Dave's air in the DEI has been pretty weak, so I'm probably going to send my carriers on a cruise through the area after Rabaul. I can throw a wrench into his whole timetable for that area. As it is, I'm piling in mines at Balikpapan and Kendari. The Dutch are starting to run out of mines, so I'm starting to pull the CMs out. A large surface force is hiding at Madjene and will jump on anything landing at Balikpapan. That will be a one-trick pony show, so after that, I'll get the warships out.

Coast artillery has been fighting back at Darwin.

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring CV Soryu

There's a good chance Soryu won't make it, due to the magnificent Japanese damage control. I lost one with the other burning. Not having the turn yet, I don't know how bad. If one CV gets away, I'll be content. I'll have to put them at full throttle to get them out. I lose one. The screen said Saratoga, but I'm guessing Enterprise.

Rabaul and Darwin both fall, which I did not expect yet. Some of my troopships near Rabaul got hit, sending a few thousand Aussies to the bottom. I need to salvage what I can at this point. If I can get out of this trading a carrier apiece, I won't be too upset. Adding insult to injury, the surviving carrier planes flew to Rabaul, right before it fell.

Bombings are up in China, with Nates working solely air to ground.

Kaboom!

18 planes on CAP...ooh, a JFB dream come true.

As I mentioned in another AAR...wake and rabaul are the two areas where you can expect early American carrier strikes.

Now you have to escape back thru a horde of IJN Iboats that should have relocated into that area from the Pearl strike.

The temptation to use the American carriers is strong and your opponent knows it. I have had bad luck with using my American carriers early, both were hit by subs before I launched strikes and cut my air groups in half. Luckily I only lost one carrier and went on to save the rest until I could combine them with the growing American carrier threat lat 43 early 44. I now never use the early war Americans carriers without knowing where at least 2/3rds of the KB is.

Yeah, I seem to make the same blunder game after game. I shoulda just sent them to the DEI.

Both are gone now. KB seemed to arrive from all points of the compass and is hitting warships and transports. So I traded two for *maybe* one. Saratoga was rounding Pago Pago, bound for Sydney, but I'm pulling her back to Pearl. York's due in about 5 days. I'll just chill for the time being. I thought KB was well to the north, but just guessed wrong.

Everything ain't all bad. I've about a division of Aussie troops either at or nearing Noumea, so I can probably fend off whatever comes down from Koumac. Dave also seems to be making no moves towards Burma, and I've been feeding as much troops and supply into there. There's lots of stray troops which couldn't get to Singapore and he'll have to deal with them sooner or later. I'm also trying to prop up the obvious landing spots in India, after the way KenchiSulla tore me up there. When more RN carriers arrive, I may start patrolling nearer to Malaya in case he tries to send troops on the cheap.

So in the meantime, I'll worry about upgrading my carriers. Sara needs to offload those 8" guns anyway. All my BBs are now slowly making their way to the states for permanent repair. Bunches of troops and planes are shipping out from the states. For the time being, I'll get Suva, Pago and Noumea beefed up. As usual, xAPs are at a premium right now, with nowhere near enough. The assault transports are accumulating at Pearl, and I'm using them to get the little island bases supplied. Midway's set to be my main sub base, with an AS and AR now there.

Dave seems to be in no hurry to wrap up Luzon.

Noumea is a POW camp and he can take it whenever he wants to prior to Sep 42. B to defend Palembang with a Division plus if possible since it generates supplies you won't quickly run out and if he allows u enough time you can get the forts 4-6 lvl. Garrison Coccos Island as a possible springboard back into the Java Sumatra theater later. At this point of the war he can take whatever he wants if he puts in enough troops the allied task is to figure out where his major effort is and do something else away from that, until he shifts and then you moved back in where he left.

23 December 1944

More Landings:

Troops ashore at Reef Islands (121,142) and Wyndham. With him landing at every little minor island, he's gotta be weak somewhere. In my Japanese game, it seemed I never had enough troops for anything.

I'm wondering if he'll be ignoring India/Burma at this point.

One unit showed up in the hex next to Noumea. I can probably beat them off now, as I have two brigades there.

Queen Elizabeth arrives at San Francisco. She'll need 4 days in the yard before I get her shipping stuff. I always set her to cruise speed to keep the wear and tear down. High maintenance ship.

Some good news is that I bloodied him at Balikpapan. I hit him at the port and chased him a few hexes from there. A sub also contributed.

A lot of my CLs and DDs got beat up a bit, so they're moving a bit slow. I'll get everyone to Soerabaja for fuel and then to Australia after that. It's too late for the troops there, but hopefully he'll feel the crunch with some transports gone.

That is a monster SAG![X(] 25 ships....did really, really well.

I can't imagine watching that turn as Japan in the early days. That may be the best use of Force Z + I have ever seen. Unfortunately they weren't loaded with troops.

This is what they call a 'target rich environment'.
Did you see the collision between 2 allied DDs?
