48 x F4F on that CVE... One would think that he would have his replenishment CVEs loaded with Hellcats, not Wildcats. This seems to indicate to me that the air attrition rate has been high enough to leave him equipping some of his fleet carriers with the older fighters. Either that, or he was using that escort carrier to bring in Marine fighter squadrons to the new airfields.

Nearly forgot the truly momentous event of the day. Over the skies of Miri appear a large formation (60 Planes) of new 4EB. Flying at 15,000 Ft the dreaded B-29 Superfortress makes its combat debut. The bombs strike at the oil fields destroying 37 derricks.

My fear was Dan would announce these planes by doing a Port Strike first and then go after economic targets. Thankfully he does not so we're able to pull everything but ships undergoing repairs or refit.

There is a Sentai of Franks and Georges at each of the major Oil Centers (Tarakan, Balikpapan, Miri, and Brunei). They had been resting/training. Now they take to the skies. The next B-29 strike shall be met with serious resistance. We'll see how tough these new planes are...

Unless it is carriers, the oil is more important than ships at this stage. I would have opted for the oil too.

Great job on Sam. How many r&d factories did you have on them?

I started with FIVE (at 32-36 each) in early-42. Don't remember when due to the game being so disjointed over the years of starts and stops. Actually had airframes avialable in April but the engines didn't advance and start NOW.

Question: Have you been using the George N1K4 that is CV capable in your mod? Isn't it as good as the Sam essentially?

The N1K4 was not available until 4-45 so I elected to go with Sam. Will check the differences and see regarding the airframe.

A7M2 391 MPH, Armor 1, 16 Firepower, MVR 25 to 31K
N1K4 372 MPH, Armor 1, 22 Firepower, MVR 29 to 21K

The Sam appeared to be a better choice.

In our first ATA combat with the Superfort, 14 Franks tangle with 4 B-29. The Franks shot down THREE of the big aircraft. A sense of optimism surfaces within the fighter pilots. They will learn better I think...

The Kido Butai returns to Saipan without seeing a sub or getting spotted. Now...a short time to gather as production begins on the Sam. Great hope there but there is also strong discussion of using the carriers as LRCAP for a bombardment run by ALL of Japan's heavy ships. Those B-29 at Legaspi are rather enticing. Orders go out to keep a close eye on the Allied Fleet...

Elsewhere...

...all four of the islands between Formosa and Luzon find AKs/LSTs off their coasts as troops disembark to garrison these islands. Roughly 60-90 AV move onto each base with 4-5,000 supply. These potential Allied bases will not fall to any Fast TF. The Allies will have to come up in strength to take them. By that time the Kamikaze shall ring in their ears.

...the beaten Burmese Army continues a slow withdrawal towards Pegu and Rangoon. Sixteen units arrive at Moulmein. These are Engineers and Base Forces. They will move out to strengthen bases to the south.

...Baybay (Central Philippines) is landed upon but the Allies don't take the base on the first effort. Planes arrive in Iliolo to see if a small dent can be made at the invasion TFs here.

...Namlea has several TF landing at it. A counterstroke has already been in the works and includes the first unit designated as Kamikaze. We'll see how the Allies deal with this new weapon.

...a Convoy carrying 425,000 resources and 125,000 fuel/oil slips through the Formosa Strait with no issues. It is to be followed in 4-5 days by a massed tank convoy carrying 245,000 fuel and 120,000 oil.

The second major raid by B-29 is a ship repair yard strike (weird choice) against Shanghai. As a result of this attack, all Japanese Fighter units from Hiroshima through all of Kyushu shift from 100% training to 30% CAP--20% Rest--50% Training. If these silver birds come over Southern Japan they will find resistance...

more interesting should be to hear about your efforts to dent the US Navy array.

Very briefly and summarized, the actions off Ramree and northern guinea + the subs attacks were just excellent, but we need more consistency, other wise the clock shall contnue to advance in Us advantage.

But, if you can generate some consistent attrite on the US logistics, even at expense of higher losses (in land units and planes - but not too much higher), we can turn the watch and clock to tic on our advantage, given that even the US is in sharp difficulty in mantaining all of that huge array stretching from Southern DI up to Legaspi.
