This is turning into a turkey shoot. If things are getting too easy for you, it might be time to switch horses and try playing as the big, bad rooskies.

Personally I find playing the Soviets more fun than Nato.

Jagger2002,

You may be right - this one did not end up being much of a challenge. Most of the RGJ have not had anything to do. I've taken some loses, but nothing compared to the Soviets. They kept trying to come up the middle and just got chewed up.

B Sqn is now approaching the crossroads - hopefully the image will post this time...

Have a good day,

Mike

Excroat3,

Yeah, I'm not sure why. I've been posting the images like normal, but they are not showing up.

In the end, I counter attacked with B sqn towards the Crossroads. My mortars put down some smoke and my M109s pounded the Soviet forces around the crossroads and we took them back. The smoke was very effective - I could see through it, while the T-64s could not!

I've ended up with a decisive victory. Hopefully, I can get the images to post...

AAR

What did I do right?

Really, most things went well. I thumped the Soviets, even though they sent probably 6 TBs and 2-3 MRBs my way.

My plan was to put most of my force near the crossroads and hang on. It worked really well. For the most part, my forces did not move much once they got into position. My AT resources and Arty inflicted a ton of damage on the Soviets.

The Counter attack worked really well. The smoke, M109 fire missions and the advance of B Sqn worked really well and took out the remaining Soviets near the crossroads. It helped that they were already worn out, but I liked how the attack went in. The only thing that did not really work in the counterattack is that the Sqn HQ got left behind for a while – I think that I had it wait at a waypoint when I should not have.

The British Inf Battalion org is very good with the number of AT resources available. The AT Platoon had over 100 kills – with over 75 T-64s – and that is with one section seeing no action.

My M109s also were very effective – with about 200 kills. I was able to resupply a pl at a time while keeping the pressure on the Soviets. Did not do much CB fire though.

What could I improve on?

The initial deployment was a race – not sure I could have gotten units in place any faster, but maybe I should have not tried to go so far with A Coy (RGJ) and with A Sqn. A Sqn got wiped out completely, but gave me time to get my forces in place.

Observation – I had a hard time keeping observation along the A30. It would have been nice to have had a couple of more scout/recce units in location to keep eyes on what was coming.

Thoughts on the scenario/game

It was not much of a challenge. The Soviets kept trying to force themselves along the A30 corridor and they got pounded. I did not need to do much once I got my forces in place.

I enjoyed launching a counter attack at the end – it was fun seeing all the elements come together.

I also achieved a Decisive Success in my attempt but elected to play into extra time, mainly to complete my limited counter-attack to regain the main crossroad, which I haven't finished yet. I've included a link to my planning map and will write an AAR when I have a bit more time: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/716 ... d_BAOR.pdf

The darker blue graphics on the map represent my original BAOR plan and lighter blue graphics my subsequent moves. The most satisfying part of this playthrough for me, wiping the Soviet divisional (I assume) headquarters off the map, as you'll see from the red graphics on the extreme right (east) of the map!

Great AAR.
I tried this scenario two weeks ago, playing the dark side, the Soviets. Although I picked the scenario best play as Warsaw Pact against NATO AI, I found this map favor WP.
I used a caution approach at the beginning, even my scout were "using Move - Deliberate" movement. I was still be able to setup an ambush zone on that 3000VP crossroad before British AI can touch it. That 3000VP location is like a beacon in the night, the AI committed 70% of their force on it. I controlled the forest in the north and the town in the south, so it didn't end well for the British AI.
Sir? Do you want to order a Kung Pao Chicken or a Kung Fu Chicken?

KungPao,

Well done, I agree that 3000 VP location was very important and drew most of the Soviet attention. The Brits have great anti-tank resources that really help take out a tank heavy force! The forest to the North would be a great place to control and would have allowed you to destroy the Brits as they charged in towards the crossroads. Must have been fun.

Have a good day,

Crossroads,

Thanks for thinking of reasons that posting did not work. I was not using dropbox and whatever the problem was has seemed to stop - as I am posting with no difficulty in my next AAR. Here is a screen shot from late in the game.

Have a good day,

Mike

Thanks for this most excellent AAR Mike!

For some reason I am still not seeing your pictures on posts #38-40, 43-44 and 46. I see all pictures on first page, and the other pictures here. Even those I did not see yesterday, just the one above. I started to seeing them today... Anyone else?

Crossroads,

I'm not seeing those pictures either. I added one picture yesterday and it worked. I think it was likely a problem on my computer - or with the key typing at it...

If I get time this weekend, I will add some more of the screen shots.

Have a good day!
