I got the game through Steam. Does this impact downloading and using mods? Is there a tweak to get them to work?

It effects when you can get updates to the game itself when a beta patch is listed here you have to wait till steam releases it to get it for your game. The only way it would effect mods is if the mod depended on a patch you did not have I think.
Favoritism is alive and well here.
