Understanding Miles Flown reset

Post by wga8888 »

When playing as the Soviet player, when is miles flown for air units reset? At the end of the Soviet turn or the end of Axis Turn? Indirectly asking if I fly a lot of miles during missions on the Soviet turn, will those air units be reset before or after Axis movement (interdiction) and Axis attacks (ground support).

End of your/Soviet turn.

I don't think that's the case:
4.1. Game Turn Overview
A. Axis Player Turn
1) Axis Logistics Phase
2) General Logistics Phase (for Axis units only)
3) Soviet Player PBEM Save Break Phase (PBEM only)
4) Axis Action Phase
B. Soviet Player Turn
5) Soviet Logistics Phase
6) General Logistics Phase (for Soviet units only)
7) Axis Player PBEM Save Break Phase (PBEM only)
8) Soviet Action Phase

I'd be inclined to believe that aircraft miles are reset somewhere in the general logistics phase, just before your own action phase. If you bring a new airgroup to the field (100% miles flown), it won't be able to fly until your next action phase. If the miles would be reset after the Soviet turn, any reactionary air missions would accumulate miles for the next turn, and that's not happening.

So, if you exhaust your air forces during your turn, they won't be doing any interdiction or intercepting.

If you do a quick PvP test by using the '41 scenario, it's easy to verify.

Soviet Turn 1 send air force to reserve
Soviet Turn 2 put fighters on an airbase near front lines. They arrive 100% miles used.
German Turn 3 Bomb ground units near the Soviet airbase. You see them successfully intercepted by same fighters.

Ok, I'm a bit confused! Seems like it really works that way.

Are the opponents turn's miles flown "free miles", since they don't show on the next turn? I guess you at least need to have fuel and ammo for the planes to fly off-turn?

Is there a separate "miles flown" calculation for opponents action phase, or can the airplanes intercept indefinitely as long as they have fuel and ammo?

At the start of each player turn, all air miles are reset to zero. There is a miles flown calculation, but I've never gotten into the details. Sometimes planes will run out of ammo, particularly the first turn after restocking an empty base with a lot of planes and they fly a few missions. It can take a couple turns for the supply system to catch up with the need.

Well that's definitely good thing to know! Miles flown is explained quite well in the manual but there's no mention anywhere that the planes have different "miles flown pools" for each player turn. Supply system for the airbases is quite clear (keep them close to railheads!), and that's usually the bottleneck for my air activities...

Anyway, knowing that the planes can still fly on the opponents turn gives a different approach to air doctrine and supplying the bases!
