After looking at those pictures of Burma, my head hurts. Was that the intention?

I think it was to make Obvert's head hurt. And yours and mine and everyone else's! Objective achieved! [&:]

Non-base landings:

In my experience using them on accident, you can expect anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the devices to be disabled on the beach. In a few cases, I've lost enough devices to gift my opponent double-digit VPs.

I wish the game would allow a bit more leniency with these, but I figured as much. I guess it's to keep players from landing in areas that weren't viable at all even if some other spots that are not base hexes on map would have had nice long soft undefended beaches.

Puts a damper on commando and raider ops though. I forget, do the non-base invasions appear in the combat report for both players? (I seem to remember they do, which of course makes them doubly useless for surprise or behind the lines ops).

Yes, as they are part of the combat report text file as well.

I dropped a good part of a division at a coastal hex about 3 hexes south of the hex I wanted to invade. It was my staging hex where everyone was told to go and wait. I had the TFs set to Unload. The game dutifully did exactly what I told it to do. [8|]

This is why I always set to Do Not Unload until D-Day, because while routing on the way in to the beach, the last thing I am looking at is whether or not the hex I'm staging through has any speck of land in it.

The game has sputtered the past few days. I had a long dad's night, then Sqz had some commitments, and today I finally got a turn. Trouble was it is the same turn we've already played, but now a new file. I think he went back to an earlier email and played through it again. when I ran it the combat report was different.

I decided I wanted to stick to the continuity of game version, as I don't even remember what I did that turn, so sent it back to him to do again. We'll see what happens.

I have done that before at least once -- I was traveling and watched the AAR on one computer, got to the hotel with a different computer and forgot to paste in the new save.

July 24-26, 1944

SW PAC: The game is rolling again. Lots of activity around Aitape. I've been pulling troops out slowly, and by the time of the next attack hope to have it nearly empty. No sense losing troops this far forward for no reason. I've already stalled two DA attempts here and that is plenty.

Still trying to send just a bit more supply to Hollandia. Probably this will be the last top up.

BURMA: Well, the main stack went back to Meiktila, then looks to have turned to Magwe. Another set of units has moved down the road from Magwe toward the blocking hex near Prome. Very odd. See maps. Time will tell. Maybe. [:D]

All of my reinforcements will arrive in the next week to replace the Thais. I'll lose about 500 AV in the trade though, so it i a delicate time. Nice that his troops look to be heading gate other way! [;)]

OZ: Remaining fragments of units that were in Darwin get bombed mercilessly. No use of Darwin yet.

The Frank Ki-84b is now producing!!! Really looking forward to trying out this plane. This will bring Frank production to around 200 total between the a and b models. The r will likely arrive in December 44.

The J2M5 will begin producing in a few days, and the N1K5 will start up most likely in November 44, so lots of great planes coming soon.

Also just getting the Dinah KAI NF which opens two new NF group paths. The Randy Ki-102b is also online to update the FB groups.

New Airframes
This is going to be an interesting month as a lot of new stuff is arriving.

The main event is the Ki-84b. Not faster. Not less service. Not more manoeuvrable. But ...

... it has the CL 20mm cannons! That is huge.

This should be the bomber killer of the rest of the war. I think in the low CAP it could be a very good top level plane as well, really getting in and kicking stuff down with a few good 20mm shells.

July 27-31, 1944
SW PAC: A failed attempt to target a convoy heading for Ponape loses me 3 old DDs as they don't get out of air strike range in time. I've got to stop that now. I'll let him come to me as I can't afford useless losses to the DD fleet. Lots of 27 knot late DDs arriving, but they're not so good, so even these Mutsukis are a tough loss now.

The Allies take an almost empty Aitape. Now it's getting close to Hollandia. We'll see what he does. Will the big invasion come soon, or is a bypass in order? [:)]

B-24s again bomb Wolei, and we had a LR CAP set up. Get about 2 Libs and trade some shots with the sweeping P-38s. He's also doing some night bombing of Truk with slight effect.

BURMA: The big event of the week is a strike on the Allied base at Silchar. i'd been reconning some of the NE India bases and noticed that both Dimapur and Silchar had LOTS of planes on the round but few to no fighters and not too many guns listed. Japanese recon is not always reliable, but I got the same reading over several days. Then stood down, got bombers in place, and let fly on the 31st.

Around 100 Helens took part and hit Silchar, destroying about 50 planes on the ground and damaging lots of others, with 82 hits to the fields. [:)]

Lost a few fighters to ops, but no CAP was up and didn't lose a single bomber on the day! The only downside is that the 50 Peggys tasked with striking Dimapur did not fly from Chengtu. Oh, well. I can handle that.

I expect reprisals soon.

The only other issue of note is the ground situation in Burma. The main stack has moved out of Magwe now and is pointing toward the Arakan coastline. But, this could be a path to Prome, which is vulnerable as a clear hex. We'll see where these 430k + troops go next.

My ground forces are well placed, but the Thais have just withdrawn. This takes 1,500AV of decently experienced troops off the map now (some of which had dug in to forts 4 in their blocking hexes). I've got some inexperienced IJA brigades taking their places.

August 1-4, 1944
SW PAC: Not much happening here until the 4th, then all hell broke loose. The Allies send in the biggest sweep combos yet seen. Sqz flew massive LR CAP and three sweeps at different altitudes toward Hollandia. Although we take the worst of it, the Allies probably get 1.5:1 on the day and lose around 17 P-47D25. Our Ki-100s take the brunt, losing 20+. I'll stay one more day at least here as the groups aren't too banged up. I'm flying in one more small 27 plane N1K2 group to get numbers back to 250. We'll see if the bombers come tomorrow. [:)]

BURMA: The big stack looks to be stationary in Magwe after a long walk from near Toungoo. Some units are out in front of the base and now pointing toward Ramree and the Arakan. I've built up the block on the Magwe road and I'm positioning more units to fill in behind Toungoo for quick deployment there if needed. I've got a reserve division heading to Moulmein to make two there. I'll hope to discourage landing behind the lines with these and the other units down the coast.

OZ: Darwin has not been invested by the Allies. I like that. We can wait here in stasis as long as needed, just sending oil and fuel back and storing up supply while the new airframes build up pools. [8D]

Here is a current view of the big stack in Magwe. The units one hex out of Magwe have been giving the strange multi-movement indicators for a while now. It's less than 33k though so it doesn't worry me unless some of the 74 units in Magwe join up.

Too many numbers in one hex.

It looks like the Massive stack here is shifting either to move down the yellow road to Chang Mai area or back down toward the gap between Toungoo and Chang Mai. Maybe to head through the rough to Chang Mai there? Who knows. Shifting troops to set a block and hopefully control hex sides that would give access to the Chang Mai option.

GAME: Oh, no. I've gotten page 2ed again! Good to see the forum active!

The game is still chugging along but not too much is happening. I wish I had more to report. There is one fairly big event, but that will be next post. I love this game, and want to test my defences and preparation for the end, so I'll keep at it until the Allies are sufficiently prepared to risk a big move forward.

SW PAC: Some Allied subs were caught hanging around the same hexes too long. I've got good ASW air here, but he Es really knocked em around on the 10th. Looks like two subs down judging by the direct hit messages on the second, plus Joseph's response. He's not pleased.

BURMA: This area continues to see shifting of the major Allied Army around the central valley. They've now gone to the Taung Gyi area, and the IJA has set up a block next to Toungoo. The big stack seems to move much more slowly than my forces. Some tanks have come out ahead onto the road one hex from Taung Gyi, but stalled and allowed the IJA to move into the adjacent hex, making it less likely to use deceptive movement to threaten Toungoo and Chang Mai simultaneously, which was my fear on this axis.

The Chindits tried one attack against the naval guard that share the hex with them deep in the jungles, but with a 1:2 result and equal losses. No air was used to soften things up for the Allies, and I feel pretty worried that 4Es could change the outcome significantly here. he hasn't swept to test the waters yet.

On the 13th 30 Wellingtons hit Prome and cause little damage, while getting 16 damaged. The Flak seems to be working here! [:)]

Bombers, especially 4E will certainly make a difference but in the jungle their effect is greatly muted.
