IJN destroyers upgrade paths.

Post by JockJimmy »

I am trying to understand the upgrade/conversion paths for the starting, old IJN destroyers (ie Momo, Minekaze etc. classes). There seems to be two distinct E sub-classes. Does it follow the pattern:

DD uprades to E
DD converts to APD converts to E*

With E and E* being slightly different.

Thanks in advance.

Not exactly sure what it is your looking for, but I'll take a shot. I use to convert all those small DD's to APD's that could. Now I do none, as I think they're better in the end as upgraded DD's. Also the APD's are not really needed, Japan has plenty of vessels with troop/supply capacity for moving small stuff around in fast transport TF's. Of course YMMV. If you need more info just ask.

Different "E" means different versions; you should compare armament, devices and availability between the two

Thanks for the replies and I'm sorry if I wasn't clear...

The clarification I'm looking for is this:-

The Momi DD class has an upgrade path that I can see as follows:

DD Momi > DD Momi(9/42) > E Momi(4/43) > E Momi(9/44), all at 32 kts, or
DD Momi can convert to APD Momi > APD Momi(6/43), dropping to 18 kts as it does so.

There are two further classes of E Momi in the Editor and Ships Database:- E Momi(12/43) and E Momi(9/44), both at 18 kts. I presume that the APD Momi(6/43) class can upgrade/convert to this, but I cant actually see any in game confirmation. That is what I what I would like clarified!

[A similar situation also arises with the Wakatake and Minekaze classes, and I would be happier about converting them to APDs if I was sure it was possible for them later to convert back to Es.]

No, once you change it to APD, it won't be possible to convert back to "DD" or "E" class.

which is why it is not a very popular option

Not sure if the APD's have an upgrade path, but I hadn't noticed it. Then again as I said I stopped doing the conversions because I don't believe its worth it. Look at any Japanese warship from CA down to ?, and they all have the ability to carry troops and supplies. Therefore no need for APD's. BTW Japan does start with 6 APD's, two of 29 knots and four of 18 knots.
